Funeral Services for John August Ahrens, age 84, of Marsland will be Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Chadron with Pastor Peter Bertram officiating. Burial will be at the Highland Center Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Hemingford Fire Department, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Prairie Haven Hospice. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
John August Ahrens was born on October 22, 1923 in Ravenna, NE. He was the sixth child of Henry and Johannes (Stepputtis) Ahrens. The family moved to Dawes County when John was three years old. He attended Highland Center, the same school has grandchildren attended 30 years later. He was drafted into the army when he was 21. When he reported to Omaha, he “volunteered” for the Marine Corps. John was very proud to have been a Marine and to have served his country. He was with the Marines at the landing Iwo Jima and was stationed in and occupied Japan right after the atomic bomb had been dropped. When he was discharged from the service, John returned to the table area and me the local school marm, Lila Weber. They were married April 15, 1955 and to this union three sons were born; Lee, Tom and Joe; six grandchildren; Kim, Ben, Cole, Coleman, Ian and Logan; and one great grandson Tayten.
At the time of his death, John was living on the same farm that he and his brothers and sister grew up on. John was diagnosed with bladder cancer and after a short illness died at home on July 12, 2008.

Sons- Lee and wife Cindy Ahrens of Marsland, NE; Tom Ahrens of Chadron, NE; Joe and wife Paula Ahrens of Palmer, AK.
Sister- Ella (Ahrens) Brown of Eugene, OR.
Grand Daughter- Kim (Ahrens) and husband Kory Haas of Hemingford, NE.
Grand Sons- Benjamin and wife Shelby Ahrens of Anchorage, AK; Coleman, Ian, Logan of Palmer, AK.
Great Grandson- Tayten Haas of Hemingford, NE.
Nephews & Nieces- Numerous
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
