10/30/2008 - Vincent Rotherham
Funeral Services for Vincent Rotherham, age 77, of Crawford will be Thursday October 30, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Crawford Community Building with Father Edward Berger officiating. A rosary will be on Wednesday, October 29th at 7:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Crawford. Burial will be at the Crawford City Cemetery.
Vincent L. Rotherham was born on April 19, 1931, the fifth of ten surviving children. He was born to Roy and Ann (Bauer) Rotherham on their family farm in Holt County at Ewing, Nebraska. Vince graduated from Ewing High School in 1949 and from 1952 to 1954 served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He earned several medals and accommodations. Upon returning home, Vince and brother, Jerry, operated “Rotherham Service,” a small service station in Ewing, Nebraska.
On May 4, 1957, Vince was united in marriage to Marjorie A. Weichman in Stuart, Nebraska and to this union, four children were born; Jan, Patrick, Michael and Terrence.
Vince was hired as Assistant Superintendent at Niobrara State Park in 1958 and in 1959 was appointed to Superintendent. He spent the next eight years running the park alongside his wife Marge, raising his children and surviving two major floods. In 1968, Vince and his family relocated to Fort Robinson State Park in Crawford, Nebraska. There he successfully guided Fort Robinson through a historical Indian takeover, a devastating forest fire, and a major flood. Many fond memories and life-time friends were built while working at the Fort.
In 1972, Vince purchased a small ranch outside of Crawford where he and his family raised cattle and farmed during their “spare” time. Vince so fondly called his ranch the “super dump” until several self-renovations were completed when he retired from Fort Robinson in 1993.
Vince led a busy and fulfilling life. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, lifetime member of the American Legion (50 years), PPDC board member, advisory board member of CSC, Security First Bank board member, Lions Club, Elks Club and Ducks Unlimited member.
Hunting was Vince’s passion. He hunted deer, turkey, and antelope, when in season and in the rest of the year prairie dogs. Vince’s favorite comment was, “I hunt year round, sometimes I just don’t shoot.” Vince always had a hunting story. We never tired of listening to his “Vince, Art and Charlie” stories.
Vince died on October 25, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
Vince was an honorable man, a loving husband, father and friend. He was loved and respected by many. Vince was our “rock.”

Vince has been blessed with numerous family, adopted family members, and grandchildren of the heart. Also a multitude of friends and neighbors. He will be deeply missed. Immediate Survivors: Daughter- Jan Burki and husband Monte of Ponca, NE. Sons- Pat Rotherham and wife Dani of Benkelman, NE; Mike Rotherham and wife Edma of Benkelman, NE; Terry Rotherham and wife Teresa of Germany. Grandchildren- A.J. and Lindsey, Marc, Sam, Steve & Jin, Megan, Scott, Matt, Michael, Chris, and Kyle. Great grandchildren- Elizabeth and Jill Rotherham. Brothers- Jerry and Karen Rotherham; Ed (Butch) and Carol Rotherham. Sisters- Betty Hawthorne, Donna Wood; Bernadine and Leo O’Malley; Geraldine Wright; Sharon Ward. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
