02/16/2009 - Marcella Belle Fitch

Memorial Services for Marcella Belle Fitch, age 92, of Crawford will be Monday, February 16, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Methodist Church in Harrison with Pastor Babe Richardson officiating.

A memorial has been established. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Marcella was born December 11, 1916 in Shelby, NE to James W. and Belle (McMeekin) From. The family moved to the Harrison where she grew up and attended school, graduating from high school there.  Following high school, in times before a college degree was required, she began teaching school. In 1942, she married Charles Henry and they had one son, Philip. Mr. Henry died in an auto accident in 1954 and being widowed with a small son, Marcella went to Chadron State College, obtained her degree, and returned to teaching. In 1961 she married Glen Fitch, who passed away in 2001.

Marcella impacted many lives, and her former students still remark on her teaching skills. She loved children, especially kindergarteners. She taught school in rural Sioux County, Harrison, NE, Torrington, WY and finally in Lusk, WY, where she retired. She was a great businesswoman, teacher, friend and mother. Yet these descriptions leave out her other virtues such as intelligence, courage, understanding, kindness and generosity. She managed Sioux Sundries for many years, was a 75-year member of the Methodist Church and a 54-year member of Eastern Star. She was very independent and especially enjoyed the outdoors, yard work, flowers and gardening. She loved animals and had dogs, cats, sheep, ducks, geese, chickens and goats. She could often be seen with a menagerie of animals following her on her daily walks. She had a lovely voice and often sang at weddings, etc.
