05/08/2009 - Nancy J. Akers (Wihinapa Wi)

Mass of Christian Burial for Nancy J. Akers, age 69, will be Friday, May 8, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend Peter Klink and Reverend Phil Cook officiating.
 
Wake vigil will begin Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge, SD.
 
Traditional Lakota Services provided by Mr. Wilmer Mesteth.
 
Burial will be at Holy Cross Episcopal Cemetery in Pine Ridge, SD.
 
Nancy J. Akers (Wi’hinapa Wi) was born in Pine Ridge, SD, to Arta (Irving) Carlow & Jerome Pond on May 28, 1939. Nancy passed away May 2, 2009 in Rapid City, SD surrounded by her loving family, after a long, hard fought & courageous battle with cancer.
 
Nancy graduated from Pine Ridge High School in 1957. Nancy was the postmaster for Pine Ridge Post Office until she retired after 33 years of service. After her retirement, she loved spending time with & caring for her grandchildren & many extended family members. Nancy was an avid Thorpe fan & enjoyed attending sporting events. Nancy was a devout Catholic at Sacred Heart Parish, & had a firm belief & lived by her Lakota Spirituality. She was very proud of her grandchildren & great grandchildren. Nancy was proud to be a registered Democrat. She loved reading the Rapid City Journal & watching the news. She was proud of men & women who served our country, especially her grandson, Sgt. Brandon Brown. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Children- Robert Charging Crow, Ramona (Ted) Pedregon, Rhonda (Phil Davis) Akers, & Mike (Andrea) Akers all of Pine Ridge, SD; Robin (Rob) Bila of Chadron, NE.

Adopted Children- Joe Amiottee, Dan Nelson, Dajuanna Bissonette of Pine Ridge, SD; Dave Amiottee of Rockyford, SD; Tammy Kills Small-Means of Porcupine, SD.

Adopted Sister- Ann Schreiner of Pine Ridge, SD.

Siblings- Phyllis Geibel of Rapid City, SD; Irving “Bud” Pond, Sr., Nema Delong, Pheobe Carlow, Ella “John” Carlow of Pine Ridge, SD; Joyce Pourier of Rainbow Valley, SD; Pat Carlow, Sr. of Oglala, SD; Mike Carlow, Sr. of Herd Camp, SD.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements.
