05/15/2009 - Phyllis Helzer

Memorial Services for Phyllis Helzer, age 93, of Chadron will be Friday, May 15, 2009 at 10:00 AM at the First Congregational Church in Chadron with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. 
 
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
 
A memorial has been established for the First Congregational Church. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
 
Mrs. Helzer passed away on May 12, 2009 at Crestview Care Center.
 
Phyllis Fry Helzer was born on June 20, 1915 in Brookings, South Dakota to Earl and Norella Fry. She was married to John J. Jim Helzer on June 2, 1940 in Rapid City, South Dakota. They spent 50 years of their married life in Nebraska until the death of her husband in 1991.
 
She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church UCC Church where she served as Historian, Deaconess, a member of the church choir for 50 years, a Sunday School Teacher, sponsor of the Youth Fellowship, Memorial’s chairman, and Secretary of the church Women’s Fellowship. She was Den mother for Cub scouts for eight years, President of Prep PTA, past president of Chadron Culture Club, Friends of the Library, and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a 50 year member of Eastern Star, Chaplain of DAR for several years, a member Mari Sandoz Society and RSVP. Phyllis was also a member of the Dawes County Museum. 
 
After her sons were married and left home she worked for several years at the C.S.C. Eagle Bookstore. Later she published a book about life in the years of the dust storms and the Great Depression.
 
Immediate Survivors:
 
Grandsons- John Helzer of Charlotte, VT; Charles Helzer of Ft. Collins, CO.
 
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
