Memorial Services for Opal C. Rath, age 89, of Hay Springs will be Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron.
Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville.
A memorial has been established for the Rushville Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
Opal was born on a farm northwest of Rushville, Nebraska on June 26,1920 to Edward and Marie (DePoorter) Abold. She lived in or near the Rushville community most of her life and graduated from Rushville High School in 1940.
She married Carl H. Rath in 1942 and worked at various occupations including homemaker, managing a restaurant, nurse's aide at Rushville and Gordon Hospitals and grocery store clerk for the Ideal Market in Rushville. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, canning, sewing and craft projects and spent many hours making beautiful quilts, afghans, doilies, etc. for friends and family.
She collected hundreds of old dolls that she cleaned, refurbished and redressed to be donated to the North Community Action’s Christmas toy distribution program. She also made many lap robes for patients in the Rushville nursing home and Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs. She joined the Church of Christ in 1982 and spent many hours making hospital gowns for the African hospital the church helps to support.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl (1997), one daughter Anna Marie (1949), two sisters (Leona and Mary) and one brother (Edward).

Sons-Carl Rath and wife Debbie of Omaha, NE; Dale Rath and wife Bonnie of Sheridan, WY.
Sister-Martha Windecker of Denver, CO.
Grandchildren- Margaret Colwell, Suzann Hansen, Deanna Colwell of Omaha, NE; Jason Rath and Brian Rath serving in the USAF, William Rath of Omaha, NE; Jennifer Hyde of Bartlesville, OK; Natalie Pinner serving with the US State Department in Europe.
Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
