07/25/2009 - Bessie Brave-Short Bull

Funeral Services for Bessie Brave-Short Bull,, age 80, of Chadron will be Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 10:00AM at Brother Rene Catholic Hall in Oglala with Reverend Agnes Tyon, Reverend Asa Wilson and Mrs. Madeline Garnier officiating. 
 
A one night wake will begin on Friday, July 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Brother Rene Catholic Hall in Oglala, SD.
 
Burial will be at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cemetery in Oglala, SD.
 
Bessie Brave-Short Bull went home to Jesus July 22, 2009 at her home in Chadron after a valiant battle with cancer. Her daughter Marian was at her side.
 
Bessie Brave was born on June 8, 1929 at #4 Community, Oglala, SD to William and Lena (Good Soldier) Brave. She married Kerman Short Bull.
 
Mrs. Short Bull worked various places throughout her life including the Ralph and Helen Strotheide Ranch, where she lived for many years. A prolific artistic in designing and creating morning star quilts, she gave many of these to people she met, and now these quilts warm homes nationwide. Mrs. Short Bull was a deeply loving person whose wide open arms encircled many friends as if they were family always. She was known to many in the communities as “Grandma Bessie”. A high point in her life was when Oral Roberts led her to Christ in the 1970’s, and she maintained a relationship with the Roberts family through her final days.
 
Mrs. Short Bull is preceeded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters; Lillian and Carrie Brave, four daughters, Shirley and Georgiana Fills the Pipe, Carmen Short Bull-Hatch and Charlene Short Bull.
 
Immediate Survivors:
 
Son- Arthur Short Bull of Colorado.

Daughter- Marian (Short Bull) Strong of Colorado.

Adopted Daughter- Mary Beth Short Bull of Nebraska.

Grandchildren- Juanita and Shawn Hatch of Montana, Brent and Tonia Hatch of South Dakota, Richard Drake of Pennsylvania, Shannon Perkins and Heather Short Bull of South Dakota, and Dionne Strong of Colorado.
 
Nieces and Nephews- Karen, Audra and Maxine Returns, Brenda Brave, John Returns and Lyle Brave.

Great Grandchildren- 16
Great-Great Grand children- 3

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements.
