Funeral Services for John A. Herron, Sr., age 85, of Chadron will be Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Chadron with Reverend Sylvia High Karlsson officiating.
Visitation will be Monday, August 10, 2009 from 6-9:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Chadron.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department.
John A. Herron, Sr. died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the Chadron Community Hospital.
He was born September 1, 1923 in Cody, Nebraska to Edison and Magdalene (Shaffer) Herron. He graduated from Cody High School in 1941.
John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre at Aleutian Islands for the Northern Pacific Task Force on the destroyer USS Porter.
On April 11, 1947 he was united in marriage to Marion C. Claus in North Platte, NE.
The family moved to Chadron in 1953 when John began his employment with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. During this time he also worked for Ray Erlewine in the operation of his paint store. After 15 years with C&NW he began working for the U.S. Postal Service retiring in 1985.
John served in the Nebraska National Guard for 30 years from 1955 to 1985. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, lifetime member of the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department, Elks Lodge, VFW and the DAV where he was a past commander. He was also a member of the Pine Ridge Amateur Radio Club. John was a lifetime outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing. He loved attending rodeos and Husker football.

Daughter- Cathe Bishop of Chadron, NE. Sisters- Maxine Hook of Rapid City, SD; Marie Wobig of Cody, NE. Sister-In-Law- Phyllis Claus of Onawa, IA. Grandchildren- 5 Great Grandchildren- 3 In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, his grandson J.J. Herron, and grand-daughters Christy and Casey Herron. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.
