09/08/2009 - Mabell Rose Kadlecek
Funeral Services for Mabell Rose Kadlecek, age 99, of Chadron, formerly of Hay Springs, will be Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at Visitation will be Tuesday, September 8th at 7:00 PM at Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs. Burial will be in the Hay Springs Cemetery. A memorial has been established. Donations can be sent to Chamberlain-Drabbles Mortuary, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347. Mabell Rose (Addie) Kadlecek was born August 2, 1910 to William and Anna (Krotz) Addie in a log cabin near Whiteclay, Nebraska. When she was about one year old her family moved to Pine Ridge, South Dakota where her father operated a blacksmith and repair garage. She attended first grade at the Indian School in Pine Ridge, rural country school and later the schools in Rushville, Nebraska. She graduated from high school in Rushville with honors in 1929. During the last two years of high school, she took a course called Normal Training for Teachers. She completed this, passed the state examination, and was given a teaching certificate. The following spring she began a long and varied career which included rural schools in Nebraska, and elementary schools in Alexandria, Louisiana; Manderson, Holy Rosary Mission and Pine Ridge all in South Dakota. In 1932, she continued her education at Chadron State College and completed a two year course to continue her teaching career. She continued her education at Chadron State College in 1967 and graduated with honors with a Bachelors degree in Education in 1969.
Mabell was united in marriage to Edward Kadlecek in 1938. They had two sons and farmed and ranched north of Hay Springs for many years. She served on election and school boards for many years. She also enjoyed being a member of extension clubs. Mabell looked forward to the yearly meetings of the Chadron State Survivors Club. She enjoyed the Bible Study groups even after her eyesight had failed. Mabell did not let blindness stop her learning. She and special friend, Sybil, attended several conventions for the blind. The Federation of the Blind supplied her with talking books. She also had a talking computer and continued writing for several years. Mabell also belonged to a writers group at Chadron State College for several years. The instructor commented that Mabell always had a short story every week even though she was legally blind. Her latest writing, “A Century of Memories,” was published in 2008. She was working on another book at the time of her death.
In 1960, several Indian elders from Pine Ridge told Mabell and her husband, Edward about important history in Beaver Valley. They interviewed Indian people for the next several years who knew about that history. They wrote and published the book, “To Kill an Eagle, Indian views on the last days of Crazy Horse,” in 1981. Edward passed away in January, 1982.
In the early, 1990’s Mabell and friend, Marion Bullard, interviewed and traveled many miles in the Kistachie Hills in central Louisiana. They then wrote and published the book, “Louisiana Kistachie Hills.”
Mabell’s passions were teaching, writing, and bridging cultures. She truly enjoyed working with all groups and in particular the Lakota children on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She was one of the first three elders honored in the first, “Elders Wisdom, Children’s Songs.” presented by Hay Springs students. She was later invited to a World Organization for Youth honoring ceremony at Crazy Horse Memorial Custer, South Dakota. She was part of a group that was taken to the top of the Memorial where she thought she would never be.
Mabell passed away on September 5, 2009 at her home at Prairie Pines Lodge in Chadron, Nebraska. Prairie Pines had been her home for the past 14 years where she had many friends and enjoyed various activities.
Mabell was preceded in death by her parents, William and Anna Addie, Brother Paul and wife Myrtle, brother Walter and wife Gladys, sister Opal and husbands Franklin Tiensvold and Bob Bennett.
Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy and contentment throughout the years and all visited her during the summer of 2009. Mabell celebrated an early 99th birthday in June 2009 with several family members and again on August 2nd with her friends and family at Prairie Pines Lodge.
