Funeral Services for Harlan Rotness, age 82, of Chadron will be Monday, September 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Chadron with Reverend Sylvia High Karlsson officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Chadron Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
Honorary pallbearers are Craig Price, Mike Leavitt, Jake Brill, Joey Calamari, Jeff Fankhauser, and Larry Olson. Active pallbearers are Harlan’s six sons. Online condolences may be signed at chamberlainchapel.qwestoffice.net
John Harlan Rotness, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at Chadron Community Hospital.
Harlan was born February 3, 1927 in Columbia Township, Polk County, Minnesota. He was the son of John and Ida (Hanson) Rotness. He grew up on the family farm east of Fosston, Minnesota. He attended the Kings Lutheran Church and was confirmed on June 22, 1941. He was educated in the Pine Hills School and Fosston Public School.
Harlan worked as a mechanic in the Fosston area before entering the service on April 16, 1945. He served in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa, Japan. On January 5, 1947 he was discharged with the rank of Technician Fourth Grade.
Harlan attended Dunwoody Technical Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota before returning to his hometown where he married Ellen Patricia Brothen, on April 4, 1956 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bagley, Minnesota.
Harlan worked as an auto mechanic at Wynnes Chevrolet before moving his family to Chadron, Nebraska in November of 1972. He accepted a position with Reids of Chadron as an Automotive Technician and Air Conditioning Specialist. He later went on to work for Solar Motors in Chadron. He retired after turning wrenches for forty-five years.
Harlan learned the enjoyment of fishing while growing up in Minnesota, spending time with family and friends. He was very active in the Chadron VFW, Post 1375, where he was Commander for several years.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers; Ivan, Kenneth, and Donald, and also by one grandson, Seth.

Wife- of 53 years, Ellen.
Children- Katie Baril of Detroit Lakes, MN; David and Barb of Helena, MT; Michael and Mary of Alliance, NE; John and Linda of Hay Springs, NE; Leslie and Sandy of Kennewick, WA; Marilyn Caparoon and Scott Diehl of Chadron, NE; Marvel of Lake Stevens, WA; Marvin and Renee of Lake Stevens, WA.
Grandchildren- 16
Great Grandchildren- 5 Sisters- Delores Dyrdahl, Idella Olson, Helen Rotness, Geraldine and Ralph Hove, all of Fosston, MN; Jean and Les Jacobsen of Dillworth, MN.
Sisters-In-Law- Eunice Rotness of Hibbing, MN; Hatsue Rotness of SeaTac, WA; Ethel Radosivich of Buhl, MN.
Nieces and Nephews- Several Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
