09/30/2009 - Gordon Leroy Swanson

Funeral Services for Gordon Leroy Swanson, age 76, of Gordon will be on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Grace Lutheran Church of Gordon with Reverend Adam Sorenson officiating.
 
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 29th from 6-8:00 PM at Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home.
 
Burial with Military Honors will be at the Gordon Cemetery.
 
A memorial has been established for the Sheridan County Fair and Rodeo Association. Donations may be sent to Bank of the West, P.O. Box 250, Gordon, NE 69343.
 
Pallbearers include his grandsons: Kyle Probasco, Daniel Timmer, Josh Swanson, Zach Swanson, Kody Probasco, Clay Rockwell, Gabe Timmer, Klint Probasco and Matt Swanson.
 
Honorary Pallbearers: Lacey Timmer, Kirsten Nauhaus, Kirbi Woltemath, Abby Wiese, Alex Fief, Jessica Swanson, Chloe Swanson, Jake Rockwell, Dillon Sullivan, Cade and Cole Rockwell, Aaron Strait and Jessica Graves.
 
Gordon Leroy Swanson departed this life Friday, September 25, 2009, at his home just East of Gordon.
 
Gordon was born October 10, 1932, to Joe and Joy (Sanders) Swanson at the ranch house in Irwin, NE. After graduation from Gordon High School in 1952 he served in the Navy on the USS Repose and the USS Eversole until his discharge in 1955.
 
He married Lois Hanneman in 1954, and together they raised six children, three boys and three girls. Gordon worked for Martin-Marietta Missile Plant Fire Dept. in Denver, CO, for four years before enrolling at Chadron State College in 1959. He received his B.S. In education in 1962 and while attending he was a member of the rodeo team and National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. He began his teaching career in Hays Center, NE, in 1962. In 1965 he took a teaching position in Wray, CO, where he stayed until 1977. While at Wray he received his Masters Degree in psychology-guidance and counseling taking classes during the summers at UNC, BYU, and ASC. In Wray he was active in coaching track, officiating wrestling, and the Wray Elks Lodge, where he became Exalted Ruler in 1975. After 16 years in the education field he took a job as an agent operator in 1979 with Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1987 he took a job in Alliance, NE as equipment operator until 1999 when he retired and moved back to Gordon, NE. Gordon and Lois purchased a fix-it-up place East of Gordon and built a beautiful home. Gordon also ran a small herd of charolais cattle on his ranch South of the Niobrara River in the Sandhills.
 
Gordon was a member of the American Legion, the Old Time Cowboy Association, and the Grace Lutheran Church. He enjoyed the Nebraska Cornhusker football program. Gordon's pride and joy was his family whom he loved dearly, and spent many a hour supporting.
 
Preceding him in death were parents Joe and Joy Swanson, and brother Rodney.

Children- Rick and wife Toni of Las Animas, CO; Lee Ann of Wray, CO; Joni of Wray, CO; Lisa and husband Gary of Wray, CO; Mike and wife Cindy of Loveland, CO; Scott and wife Suzanne of New Richland, MN.
 
Grandchildren- 22
Great Grandchildren- 7

Sisters- Paige King of Tustin, CA; Shirley Beattie of Gordon, NE.
 
Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
