Eldon Walter “Pa” Schomp, 86 of North Platte passed away November 10, 2009 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 16, 1923 in Sioux County to Stewart Walter and Bertha Mathews Schomp. He grew up in Sioux County in the Mitchell area and attended Liberty High School. After school he worked on the thrashing crews and later worked at the Sioux ordinance ammunition depot at Sidney, NE.

He entered the United States Army serving in Germany and Switzerland during WWII. After returning from the service, he returned to Sidney and continued his work at the Sioux ordinance. On November 2, 1946 in Kimball, NE he married Edyth Francis Romell. Together they walked hand in hand for 63 years.

The couple moved to Hay Springs in 1947 where they farmed. In 1959 they bought a ranch on the Niobrara River south of Hay Springs. They continued ranching for many years, while also running an auction business and selling seed corn. In 1978 Eldon took a job as a seed corn dealer as a District Sales Manager which eventually brought him to North Platte.

He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and former member of the Eagles and American Legion. Eldon’s life revolved around his wife, Edyth, his sons, Steve and Ben and his pride and joy, “his grandkids”. He enjoyed rodeos with his sons, hunting and fishing with his family, and especially enjoyed anything involved with his grandchildren.
