Emil was born April 17, 1949 in Ekalaka, Montana. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1968. While in school Emil was a member of the wrestling team and helped out on the family ranch.
After graduating from high school, Emil enlisted with the United States Navy where he served from 1969 to 1971.
