Mass of Christian Burial for Carl Clemens Lindeken, age 98, of Chadron, will be Friday, January 8, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Tim Stoner and Father Ed Cortney officiating.
A wake will be Thursday, January 8th at 7:00 PM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ponderosa Villa Activities Fund, Red Cloud Indian School. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Carl Clemens Lindeken died on January 2, 2010 at Chadron Community Hospital after a short illness. Carl was the second oldest of 6 children born to Susanna and Harry Lindeken on July 6, 1911 in Crete, Nebraska. He was the last of the Lindeken offspring to pass away. In February 1920, the family settled on a farm eight miles east of Chadron. Carl spoke only German when he started school, and got to school by foot or horseback. His younger sister, Helen, often spoke of Carl’s kindness helping her though the snowdrifts and carrying her lunch pail. After the 6th grade, his formal school was completed and he and his brother, Jack, worked together on numerous farm ventures. While in their twenties, they also built many dams and roads in the area. Carl often talked about hauling gravel from Wyoming to construct Smiley Canyon Road on the night shift during cold weather. He was only 15, but a driver’s license wasn’t required.
Carl married Gertrude Clayton on July 3, 1937 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Shortly thereafter, Gertrude contracted tuberculosis at which time there was no cure, but was given streptomycin, an experimental drug which allowed her to regain her health and functionality with long term care and treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. For almost eleven years, Carl cared for her, getting up early to cook meals and do other chores before leaving to start his farm work. After re-gaining her health they raised two daughters, Mary and Carla and enjoyed a loving partnership for 45 years until Gertrude’s death from breast cancer metastasis on April 9, 1982.
Carl continued his lifelong dedication to farming and ranching until he retired at the age of 80 and moved to Chadron. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Nebraska wheat growers association, and a life member of the Chadron Elks Lodge. On January 8, 2009 he became a resident of Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, endearing himself to the many staff members and renewing old acquaintances.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and siblings Jack and Bill Lindeken, Helen Gorr, Byrdie Brecht, and Dorothy Nixon, niece, Jacque Lyn Clark and nephew, Lynn Gorr and one great-grandson Paul Alford.
