Funeral services for Lyle G. Carson of Hay Springs, age 79, will be Monday, January 11, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Hay Springs with Father Tim Stoner officiating.
A Rosary will be Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the church.
Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Hay Springs.
A memorial has been established for the Hay Springs Library or Pioneer Manor. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.

Lyle Gerald Carson was the youngest of ten children, born September 13, 1930 at Interior, South Dakota. At age three his family moved to Rapid City, SD and later to High Grove, California. Sometime after his father died, so in 1941, Lyle and his mother moved back to South Dakota.
During his high school years he attended Rapid City’s Cathedral High School where he also joined the Catholic Church.
Lyle enlisted in the Navy at Rapid City, SD and departed from San Diego, CA 1948. He served on the battleship USS Antietam as a radar man. He also served on the ground at Korea.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, in 1952 he moved back to Rapid City, SD. Soon after, he married Barbara Biggins May 26, 1953 until 1976. They raised four children and lived in Rapid City, SD, and Whitney, Nebraska, and later Chadron, NE. During this time he joined the Army National Guard for four years.
In April 8, 1983, Lyle married Jacquelyn Brandt. He and Jackie lived in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Hay Springs, NE.
Lyle was a fervent patriot, and an active lifetime member of each of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and the National Rifle Association.
His diverse work history involved trucking, working as a lumberjack, a car man on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, a gunsmith and he served as the water commissioner at Whitney, NE.
Following brain surgery (1990) he worked for the City of Hill City, and Sheridan Lake Marina, and the US Forest Service in the Black Hills. After moving to Hay Springs he worked for the US Forest Service in Chadron, NE and eventually retired.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, hiking, gold panning, farming, gardening, woodworking, and traveling the back roads of the Great Plains.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents William Arthur and Nelly Jean (Warthen) Carson, and five brothers: Leslie, Bob, Carroll, Harold, and Kenneth Carson, and one sister Helen Van Duke. Immediate Survivors:
Wife- Jackie Carson of Hay Springs, NE.
Brother- Don and Jim Carson. Sister- Pauline Richards. Daughters- Sheryl Carson and Mary and husband Del Hindman. Sons- Michael and wife Sue Carson ; David Carson. “Adopted” Daughter- Sheryl (Edwards) Harshman. Step-Children- Debbie and husband Paul Parker; Tami Thomasson, Mark and wife Deb Brandt; Mike and wife Cathy Brandt. Grandchildren- Shawn and wife LeAnn Hindman; Tammy and husband Ken Robinson; Alicia and husband Scott Wright; Tara Hindman; Micki Carson. Great Grandchildren- 8 Step-Grandchildren- Heather, Beth, John Brandt, Stephanie and Tiffany Parker, Mikayla and Aaron Brandt, David and Alex Thomasson. Great Step-Grandchildren- 5 Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
