Raymond Michael Henry passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs, Nebraska.

Raymond was born June 26, 1918 at Monticello Iowa to Edward and Mary Ellen (McAleer) Henry. He was the second youngest of five children. Raymond grew up on a ranch near Ardmore, South Dakota.

He attended Ardmore Schools until his Junior year. He was needed to help support his family due to his father’s passing. To help support the family, he drove a team of four horses building dams for the WPA and worked on the farm. Raymond hitchhiked to Oregon working at various jobs.

At the age of 21, Raymond was drafted into the Army on January 21, 1941, and was stationed in the South Pacific. After being injured he was discharged from Camp Carson, Colorado on July 14, 1945.

After being discharged from the service he settled near Orella, Nebraska to be near his sister, Lucile. It was there he met a ranch girl named Thelma Norman. They were married on October 13, 1945 in Crawford, Nebraska and worked for Thelma’s parents on the ranch. In 1948 Raymond and Thelma moved to the Pine Ridge reservation near White Clay, Nebraska. While living on the ranch their union was blessed with three sons, Raymond Michael Henry Jr., Edward Patrick Henry and Timothy Andrew Henry.

While living on the ranch in South Dakota he was a brand inspector for over 40 years and served on the boards of the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS) and the Farm Service Agency.

There were four constants in Raymond’s life being: his love of animals, and his regular attendance of Mass, his love of dances, and his love of being at home with his family.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary Ellen, brother, Laurence Henry, and sisters, Imogene Konrath, Lucile Zurn and Lorene Eilers.
