05/10/2010 - Thomas Johnson Hughes

Funeral services for Thomas Johnson Hughes, age 78, of Hay Springs will be Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Hay Springs with Father Tim Stoner, Father James Joseph, Father Jim Hightoff, and Father Art Faser officiating.

A rosary will be Monday, May 10th at 7:00 PM at St. Columbkille Catholic Church.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery with Military Honors.
 
A memorial has been established for the Hay Springs Fire Department Building Fund; St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Tom Hughes long time rancher passed away May 6, 1010.
 
Tom was born September 2, 1931 to Tom L. & Elizabeth Johnson Hughes. He attended grade school at St. Agnes academy in Alliance, NE and graduated High School in Hay Springs in 1949. He enlisted serving his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged in January of 1955 as a Bosun Mate and returned to the family ranch. Tom was a long time member of Post 239 and served as Post Commander in 1974. He was President of Hay Springs Rural Fire Department till his death. Tom was a member of St. Columbkille Church.
           
On September 5, 1955 he was united in marriage to Lois Monroe at Holy Rosary Church in Alliance, NE. To this union seven children were born.
 
Tom was an avid sports fan and loved watching his children and grandchildren in the various activities. He never met a stranger he didn’t know and was often seen at a card table. He was loved and will be missed.

Sons- Gregg & Donna of Hasting, NE; Kirk & Linda of Glenrock, WY; Burrell Hughes of Hay Springs, NE; Bart and wife Deb Hughes of Sturgis, SD

Daughter- Lisa Hughes of Casper, WY; Heather and husband Kalvin Kresl of Hemingford, NE; Debbie & Mike Rooney of Arvada, CO.
 
Grandchildren- 18
Great Grandchildren- 1

Nieces & Nephews- Several
