Funeral services for William Henry "Bill" Schlickbernd Jr., age 84, of Chadron will be Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron with Father Tim Stoner officiating.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
A rosary will be Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 7:00 PM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron.
A memorial has been established for the Dawes County 4-H Foundation. Donations may be sent in care of the First National Bank of North Platte, 315 W. 3rd St., Chadron, Nebraska 69337.

William Henry "Bill" Schlickbernd Jr. passed away Friday, June 4th, 2010, at home in Chadron, Nebraska.
Bill was born July 30, 1925 in Beemer, Nebraska to William Schlickbernd Sr. and Aloysia (Vandenberg) Schlickbernd. Bill grew up on the family farm with his brother Harold and younger sister Mary Alice. As a young man, he was active in 4-H and developed an interest in radios and music. He graduated from Guardian Angels Catholic High School in West Point, Nebraska in 1943. Bill turned his interest in radios into a lifelong love of electronics. He was a graduate of Coyne Radio School in Chicago, and received his amateur radio license, W0VAD, in 1947. In July, Bill met his lifelong love, Beata Marie Krienert, and proposed on Christmas Eve, 1948. They were wed on April 20, 1949 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Osmond, Nebraska and settled in Beemer where he worked in the poultry business. With his interest in radios and the new medium of television, Bill decided to strike out on his own, and with Beata and their three small children, moved to Chadron in 1953. Bill started his own business, Bill's TV & Radio, which he operated until his retirement in 1990.
Bill and Beata raised their family of 12 in Chadron, Whitney, and Crawford, Nebraska and spent the last 42 years at their home on Chapin Street in Chadron. Bill was an avid musician and many in western Nebraska enjoyed listening to him play his guitar, banjo, fiddle or accordion. He loved gardening and tinkering with his electronics. Through his Amateur "Ham" radio hobby, he had friends around the world. Always interested in many cultures, he and Beata traveled throughout the U.S. and around the world to Canada, Mexico, Europe and the Far East. An amateur linguist, he taught himself German and Russian, and attended classes at Chadron State College to learn the Lakota language to honor his many friends on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. Bill had a wonderful sense of humor and an endless supply of jokes and anecdotes. He never knew a stranger, only friends he hadn't met. Bill was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for 57 years and was affiliated with the Pine Ridge Amateur Radio Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Knights of Columbus, and the Panhandle Coin Club.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son Stephen.
Immediate Survivors: Wife- of 61 years, Beata of Chadron, NE. Brother- Harold of Beemer, NE. Sister- Mary Sharp of Rapid City, SD. Children- Elizabeth Davenport of San Antonio, TX; John of Scottsbluff, NE; David and his wife Cecilia of Northglenn, CO; Fred and his wife Patty of Stapleton, NE; Margaret Zipperlen and her husband Alvin of Omaha, NE; Joan Kutschmarski and her husband Rainer of Lincoln, NE; Diane Adams and her husband David of Blanchard, OK; Mark and his wife Valerie of Solomons, MD; Joe of Fremont, NE; Vincent and his wife Kathy of D'Iberville, MI, Mary Ryan and her husband Phil of Lincoln, NE; Angela Amith and her husband Dennis of Lemoore, CA. Grandchildren- 21 Great-Grandchildren- 13 Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
