Memorial services for Bennett Franklin Johnson, age 91, of Rapid City, SD, formerly of Rushville will be Saturday, June12, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Rushville with Reverend Al Trucano officiating.
Inurnment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Rushville with military honors by Rushville American Legion Post 161. Friends may sign his online guest register and offer condolences at www.serenityspringsfuneralchapel.com.
Bennett Franklin Johnson passed away at West Hills Village in Rapid City, SD on June 8, 2010.
Bennett was born December l6, l9l8 in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Cornelius and Jean (Murray) Johnson. He lived on the family farm near Whitla, Alberta and began the 3rd grade in Canada. In l926 he journeyed by car with his Mother, 4 siblings, and Grandfather to begin a new life on a farm near Rushville, NE. His father followed soon after, by train, with machinery, horses and the family pet, Chappy. Bennett graduated from high school in l936. His study of business and bookkeeping classes led to the opportunity to begin work at Stockmens National Bank. At the bank he considered Albert Dale an influential mentor. Bennett worked at the bank his entire career which spanned 50 years. He retired in 1985.
Late in the l930’s war broke out in many places. Bennett became a U.S. citizen in l941 so that he could serve his country. The years l942-l946 saw him serving in the U.S. Navy in Idaho, Hawaii, and Okinawa. He married Ruth Talbot October 11, l942 and she too worked for the Navy until the war was over. Bennett and Ruth returned to their hometown and began their family, welcoming two daughters, Karen and Beth.
Bennett was a member of the Masonic Lodge, achieving the rank of Master Mason and receiving his 50 year pin in l996. He was a member of Morse Memorial Methodist Church and served as treasurer and/or Board Member of many civic organizations, including the Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion. He served on the Rushville School board for 25 years during which the gym and auditorium were built. Bennett was a quiet, dedicated booster of his hometown and a generous donor to the library, school system, and softball complex. One of his favorite projects was envisioning and helping complete the Parkview Apartment Complex.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Sanderson, 2 sisters-in-law, and 3 brothers-in-law.
Gentle, dedicated to his family and community, a man of integrity, a truly good human being….these are the attributes that describe Bennett and which will be very sorely missed.

Wife- Ruth Daughters and their families: Karen and husband Gary Hollstein of Dakota Dunes, SD; Beth and husband Greg Hunter, Rapid City, SD. Grandchildren- Crystal and husband Gary Day of Herforst, Germany; Paul and wife Kelly Hollstein, Lincoln, NE; Carolyn Hollstein, Kansas City, MO; Scott and wife Brittney Hunter of Kansas City, KS.
Siblings- Murray Johnson of Devils Lake, ND; Evaline Norman of Crawford, NE; Stuart Johnson of Traverse City, MI.
Sister-in-law- Leilah Talbot of Rapid City, SD. Nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel of Rapid City, SD is in charge of arrangements.
