07/09/2010 - Maxine Margaret Dau Chamberlain
Memorial service for Maxine Margaret Dau Chamberlain, age 92, will be Friday, July 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Chadron United Methodist Church with Rev. Seth Leypoldt officiating.
Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Chadron United Methodist Church or the Greenwood Cemetery Kiosk Fund. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron NE 69337.
Maxine Chamberlain passed away in her sleep the morning of July 4, 2010 at the home of her daughter, JoAnn, in Omaha where she resided for the past 3 years.
Maxine was born June 17, 1918, on a farm south of Minden, Iowa. She was the sixth child of John and Wilhelmina “Minnie” Dau. At the age of 10, Maxine and her family moved to a ranch 30 miles from Nenzel, Nebraska. From there she moved to Neligh, Nebraska, where she attended Junior High, then to Kilgore Nebraska, and on to Valentine Nebraska, where she graduated from High School in 1936. Her parents moved to Chadron in 1940, toa farm on 10th Street. Maxine taught at various country schools while attending Chadron Normal College. She graduated with a BS in Education in1941 and then began teaching second grade in Hemingford.
Maxine married Edwin Chamberlain on November 14, 1942, shortly after he had enlisted in the United States Army. During the war years, Maxine taught second grade in Newcastle and then returned home to Chadron where their first child, Don, was born. Maxine then went to Portland, Oregon with Don to stay with her sister Leota and Irvin Weihe, where she worked in the Child Care Center at the Kaiser Shipbuilding. She returned to Chadron in the summer of 1945 and taught 3rd and 4th grade at West Ward prior to Ed’s return in October, 1945. Maxine finished out the school year and then took a break from teaching to help with the Chamberlain Dairy. When the dairy was sold in 1958, Maxine went back to teaching 4th grade at Kenwood where she remained for the next 21 years, retiring in 1980. During her retirement, Maxine enjoyed painting, reading, traveling and summers with grandchildren. She was a member of Chadron Culture Club and active with United Methodist Women. In her last 10 years, she especially enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. Grandma Max will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles “Edwin”, her parents, her brother Orville and his infant twin, her sisters Wilma, Ethel and Leota, and her son-in-law Kenneth Redfern.

Son- Donald and wife Pura Chamberlain of San Jose, CA.
Daughters- JoAnn Redfern of Omaha, NE; Susan and wife David Martin of Scottsbluff, NE. Grandchildren- Nicole Redfern of Denver, CO; Shauna and husband David Sheets of Rapid City, SD; Jeremy and wife Mary Parks of Fort Collins, CO; Jennie Parks of Scottsbluff, NE; Wyatt Martin of Scottsbluff, NE. Great-Grandchildren- Roger, Faith and Isaac Sheets, Benjamin Butcher and Isabelle Parks. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
