Funeral Services for Leslie Alvin Schumacher will be Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Hoch Funeral Home in Ainsworth with Pastor Bruce Beebout officiating.
The music selection “Amazing Grace” was sung by granddaughters, Kelsi and Tessah Schumacher and the song, “Beyond The Sunset” was played.
Casketbearers were: Jerry and Tom Schumacher, Bob Baker, Brent Beebout, Brad Fiala and Dan Woods.
Honorary Casketbearers were: Glen Baker, Ocie Perrett, Lyle Irwin, Jack Clausen, Turk Beebout and Bob Keim.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron with Pastor Randy Gulbranson officiating.
A memorial has been established for the Ainsworth Senior Center, Brown County Sheriff’s Department or Brown County Ambulance Association. Donations may be sent to: Hoch Funeral Home, 1320 E. 4th St., Ainsworth, NE 69210.
Leslie Alvin Schumacher was born on October 3, 1928 at Chadron, Nebraska, the third of four children, to Henry “Hank” and Mable (Goff) Schumacher. He passed away July 29, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.
He grew up and attended school in Chadron where he met and married his wife Marjorie (Key) on May 14, 1948. They had three children, Jerry, Sue, and Tom.
Les worked in several fields, beginning with selling the Omaha Bee newspaper when he was eight years old, earning two cents per paper. As a young man in his teens, he worked on the construction of Box Butte Reservoir and in the motor pool as a civilian employee at Fort Robinson. Later, he delivered heating fuel to rural homes in Dawes County, including during the Blizzard of 1949.
He worked for several years as a sales representative for a Chadron auto parts supply business. In 1963, he began working for Knapp and Spencer Inc., a wholesale hardware supply business based in Sioux City, Iowa, and moved his family to Ainsworth, NE. He traveled over 50,000 miles a year and had accounts with many locally-owned small businesses from Rapid City, SD to Norfolk, NE. He developed numerous friendships through his work and had acquaintances in nearly every town along Highway 20 from Wyoming to Norfolk, NE. Les retired from the Nebraska Department of Roads in 1994 after 14 years as a bridge inspector and sign compliance and permitting specialist.
Les loved hunting and fishing in the Sandhills, and for several years took an annual walleye fishing trip to Canada with friends. He also liked woodworking after his retirement and spent many hours in his shop, framing pictures and building items for friends and family. He and Marge were regulars at the Ainsworth Senior Center where he valued his time visiting with friends and shooting pool, as well as driving the Center van to deliver meals. For the past seven years, they traveled to Zapata, Texas for the winter months where they enjoyed the warm climate, new friends, and the succulent fruits of a mature orange tree in their yard. Les liked to provide frequent Texas winter weather updates to family members in Nebraska.
Les was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mabel Schumacher, infant brother, Waldo, and brother, Melvin.

Daughter- Sue and husband Bob Baker of Rock Springs, WY. Sons- Jerry and wife Marilyn Schumacher of Chadron, NE; Tom and wife Trish Schumacher of Gordon, NE.
