08/26/2010 - Elsie Mae (Siders) Wohlers
Funeral services for Elsie Mae (Siders) Wohlers, age 101, who died August 20, 2010 at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, will be August 26, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church in Chadron with Pastor Bradley Daniels officiating.
Burial will be at GreenwoodCemetery immediately following the service.
A memorial has been established for the FirstBaptistChurch or the Crawford or Chadron Volunteer Rescue Units. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE69337.

Elsie was born October 13, 1908 at Oberlin, Kansas to Walter and Minnie (Oberg) Siders. With her father being a railroad man, her family moved a lot; growing up in ten different homes, Elsie was able to ride the train wherever she wanted to go. She moved with her family to Fremont, Nebraska in 1914, where she graduated from high school in 1926. She then attended normal training at MidlandCollege in Fremont. Later, she attended Chadron State College and attended some evening classes that were given in Crawford. She rode the train from Fremont to her first teaching job in the Sandhills of Nebraska, at Bingham, when she was 17 years old. She boarded with a ranch family, and rode horseback to the schoolhouse each morning, where she had to light a fire on cold mornings before school started. She taught in mostly DawesCounty rural schools for the remainder of her teaching career. Marvin and Elsie lived at Crawford until Marvin was elected as Sheriff of Dawes County (1962-1969), when they moved to the Courthouse, and Elsie cooked meals for the prisoners. Elsie also worked at Social Services for five years, and moved to New Mexico to be a volunteer at Western Indian Ministries for a year.
Elsie was teaching in the Squaw Mound community southeast of Crawford when she met her husband, Marvin Wohlers, at a country dance. They were married on December 23, 1933. To this union were born four children, Donavan, Marvina, Everett, and James, all of whom were born at Crawford. Elsie was a member of the FirstBaptistChurch in Chadron.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 43 years, Marvin; her parents; her siblings; and daughters-in-law, Barb (Kline) Wohlers and Anne (Darlington) Wohlers. She is survived by her children, Donavan (Jan) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Everett (Bev) of Boise, Idaho; Marvina (Melburn) Franey, of Chadron; and Jim, of Kenai, Alaska; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
