Funeral services for Arthur Melvin Masek, age 85, of Chadron will be Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Pastor Steve Mallery officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the CSC Foundation. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, Nebraska 69337.

Arthur Melvin Masek was born near Whiteclay, Nebraska on January 28, 1925 to Joseph and Josie Masek. He was born at home and never had a birth certificate until he applied for one several years later.
After completing the eighth grade, his father told him that it was time to go to work, so he worked on various ranches around the area putting up hay and helping with the cattle. He later married Dona White and to this union, three daughters were born; Patty Sue, Peggy Jo, and Pamela Lyn. Art had a passion for music and his favorite country artist was Gene Autry. He learned how to yodel and was very good at it. One of his most told tales was when Dwain Soester and Russ Garner would come over to his house and sing and he had a record making recorder and actually made several records of their songs.
While living in Chadron, he worked at the Staska Dairy for several years and told of the hundred of gallons of ice cream that he used to make. Just recently he was talking about exactly how much milk, cream, etc. went into each gallon. After the dairy closed, he went to work at Chadron State College as a custodian and worked there until he retired.
He shared many years with his good friend Virginia Sydow, whose family adopted Art and even after Virginia’s death, continued to include him in their family. During this time, he lost most of his sight. He then learned to trust in the Lord and walked by faith, not sight. After that he spent a lot of time listening to the radio and watching television. He always kept track of the local high school sports scores, especially Sioux County where his grandson Lane participated. He had a passion for watching the professional bull riders on TV. He never missed an event and knew all the bull riders by name.
He also was a great fan of Chad Ferley, the Oelrich’s cowboy who was the world champion saddle bronc rider a few years back. He kept track of his standings in the event and he viewed rodeo as “it wasn’t a REAL rodeo unless Chad Ferley was in it.” Art loved spending time with family and friends and even though he didn’t get out a lot, he always was concerned about what was going on their lives. He was the type of person who would give you the shirt of his back if he had it to give.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charley and Jim.
Immediate Survivors:
Daughters- Patty Kelley and husband Gary; Peggy Fox and husband Jim; Pam Soester and husband Casey. Sisters- Mary Sager, Mildred Dawkins, and Alice Howel. Brother- Joe Masek Special Grandson- Lane Grote Grandchildren- 5 Great-Grandchildren- 9 Special Friends- Dave and Phyllis Carlson and their children Ginny and David. Many nieces and nephews. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
