Funeral Services for Lois Ione Marshall, age 90, of Chadron, a long-time teacher, will be Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Chadron with Pastor Seth Leypoldt officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 1, 2010 from 6-8:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel.
Memorials have been established for the Methodist Church in Chadron and to a scholarship she set up for elementary education majors at Chadron State College. Contributions may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel at Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

She died early Monday morning at Crest View Care Center in Chadron at age 90.
She was born to Frank and Bernice (Magary) Marshall on Oct. 5, 1919 in a sod house near Hemingford. She had an older sister, Delpha, and a younger brother, Edwin.
When Ione was a child, her parents moved to a farm on the Table southwest of Chadron. One of her early activities was playing in the Squaw Mound Band. She and her sister usually rode double on a pony about 1.5 miles to attend the Highland Center School. She graduated from the eighth grade at age 12, but her parents thought she was too young to attend high school and sent her back to the school for most of another year.
She spent much of that year assisting the other students. Since there was just one teacher and about 30 students in eight grades, her help was appreciated.
In 1934, the family moved to a ranch in southeast Dawes County and she enrolled at Chadron High School that fall. She graduated in 1938. After spending a year helping on the ranch, she attended Chadron State College and earned a one-year teaching diploma in 1940. That summer she signed a contract to teach the District 79 School in Dawes County for $55 a month. She could live at home and ride a horse six miles to school each day.
This launched her 45-year teaching career. She taught in rural schools for six years, in the Hay Springs Schools for 12 years and in the Chadron Schools for 27 years before retiring in 1985. She was Chadron’s nominee for the Distinguished Educator Award given by the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1983.
Aside from the one year of college in 1939-40, she was never a full-time student again, but earned her bachelor’s degree in 1960 and her master’s degree in 1966 from Chadron State by attending workshops and evening and summer classes and taking correspondence courses. Twice during her career she also served as the principal.
Ione was an officer in the Chadron Business and Professional Women’s Club and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and received the Decoration of Chivalry from the Rebekahs. While she was teaching in Hay Springs and Chadron she was a member of Methodist Churches and served as a Sunday-school teacher and superintendent in both locations.
She also was an accomplished accordian player and entertained at senior citizen gatherings after she retired from teaching. She also did tole painting and other crafts, and gave many of the items to friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.
Immediate Survivors:
Nine first cousins, including a double-cousin, Bob Marshall of Hay Springs, NE. Numerous other relatives. Special Friends- Chuck and Janice Cressy of Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
