Funeral Mass for Marvin Irving Metzger will be Friday, January 7th at 10:00 AM at the St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Gordon, NE.
Rosary will be Thursday, January 6th at 7:00 PM.
Burial will be at the Gordon Cemetery.

Marvin Irving Metzger was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, March 3, 1914, to Pearl Grace (Parker) and William Andrew Metzger. He graduated from Gordon High School in 1932, and later earned his Bachelor of Arts from Denver University in 1937, followed by two additional years of study at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, California. He was married September 10, 1941 to Helen Josephine Keogh at the Church of the Precious Blood in Los Angeles.
Marvin enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served for three and a half years. During his enlistment, he served on two troop assault ships that saw extensive action in Casablanca, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. While serving in the Pacific Theater, Marvin was baptized a Catholic at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on the small island of Noumea, New Caledonia.
Following his discharge, he returned to the ranching business and established the Cross Heart Ranch north of Gordon. He had a special affinity for animals especially for the thoroughbreds and quarter horses he raised. During his years as a rancher, Marvin’s love of the fine arts manifested in his hobby of photography, and it was a common sight to see him behind a camera rather than in front of it. A humble man, Marvin was never one to seek the limelight in anything he did. He served as an officer in the Nebraska
Thoroughbred Racing Association and was a life long member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, and a generous supporter of the Catholic Church in whatever community he lived.
Marvin retired from ranching in 1986 when he and Helen moved to Green Valley, AZ, where he resumed his love for painting and began his second career as an artist. As a professional artist he exhibited in many galleries in Arizona, had the opportunity to work with well known artists, and loved to capture the beauty of the Southwest in his paintings.
We will remember Marvin as a patient, gentle and loving man, who never swore and always stood by his word. It would be difficult to find anyone who didn’t admire or love Marvin. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with a ready smile and a soft chuckle.
Marvin is survived by: his wife Helen, six children: Mary Helen (Chuck Cogdill), Thomas Andrew (Carolyn), Robert Allen (Mary), Margaret Ann (Jim Walsh), Michael Kevin (Barbara), and Jane Louise (Jack Connealy); twenty-five grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one sister, Ruth Evelyn Paul, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William Woodrow, sister Mary Frances, and infant sister Louise.
