Funeral Services for Helen Louise Dobbins Redfern, age 94, of Chadron will be Thursday, February 3rd at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Chadron with the Reverend Seth Leypoldt officiating.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Chadron First United Methodist Church, Pioneer Manor, or Chadron State Foundation Troy Rickenbach Scholarship or the donor’s choice. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Helen Louise Dobbins Redfern entered her final rest on January 30, 2011 at Pioneer Manor, Hay Springs, Nebraska, with family at her bedside.
Helen was born August 20, 1916 in a sod house near Tryon, Nebraska to Walter and Amanda (Martens) Dobbins. After a brief time in Ohiowa, Nebraska, the family moved to Dawes County when Helen was six months old, settling on a farm north of Chadron where she was raised with her younger brothers and sisters. She attended rural schools and boarded in town to attend to Chadron High School working where she could. After graduating high school she worked at the Ben Franklin store until marriage.
She married Gordon Redfern on February 20, 1938. To this union were born five children, Marilynne, Sandra, Kenneth, Sharon, and Linda. Gordon and Helen lived and farmed six miles east of Chadron on Redfern Road for over 70 years.
Helen’s passion was her family and her garden, especially her roses. She was also active in the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school when her children were young and later led Bible studies. Helen was active in United Methodist Women and was known for her delicious dinner rolls served at church dinners and sold at church bazaars. She was a long term member of Pioneer Ladies Aid and often hosted their meetings. Never having an idle moment, she produced many craft items including crocheted Afghans for all her children and grandchildren, and with the church handcraft group, denim quilts. She collected favorite poems and sayings.
Along with her husband, Gordon, she supported her children in their education and extra-curricular activities, chauffeuring them and their friends to many events. She was proud of her children and grandchildren and their educational and work achievements.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard Dobbins, husband Gordon, son Kenneth, grandson Troy Rickenbach and one great granddaughter Lorna Stewart.

Daughters: Marilynne and husband Richard Rickenbach; Eden Prairie of MN; Sandra and husband Spurgeon Watford of Colorado Springs, SD; Sharon and husband Bob Rickenbach of Chadron, NE; Linda Redfern of Scottsbluff, NE.
Daughter-In-Law: JoAnn Redfern of Omaha, NE.
Grandchildren: Brad Rickenbach, Brent Rickenbach, Brian Rickenbach, Rodd Rickenbach, Todd Rickenbach, Nicole Redfern, Andrea Cruz, Shauna Sheets, Julianne Stewart. Great Grandchildren: 18
Sisters: Lucille Haley; Shirley Cuckler
Brother: Clayton Dobbins Cousins, Nieces & Nephews: Several Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.
