Funeral services for Eugene Francis Wasserburger, age 95, of Crawford, will be Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Crawford with Father Bernard Berger officiating.
A rosary will be Friday, April 8, 2011 at 8:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Interment will be at the CrawfordCityCemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Jay Lemmon, Corey Wasserburger, Jace Lemmon, Willie Wasserburger, Dylan Zeller and Rick Lewis.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Walter, David and Cecil Wasserburger, Christopher Weaver, Ethan Schnell, Jack Carnahan and Jack Lewis.
A memorial has been established for the Crawford Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, Nebraska 69337.

Eugene Francis Wasserburger was born May 13, 1915, in Orella, Sioux County, Nebraska to Joseph Charles and Elizabeth Gargen Carnahan-Wasserburger, the oldest of five children. He passed away April 7, 2011, at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, Nebraska, one month before his 96th birthday. He married Thera Davis on June 24, 1939 in Crawford, Nebraska. They were married 59 years.
Gene, as he was known by all in Crawford worked several jobs before working at FortRobinson in the Post Engineer’s office and on July 4th 1943, he was drafted into the Army and reported to Basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. He worked in the Corps of Engineers, serving in Europe. He participated in the invasion at Normandy on OmahaBeach. He attained the rank of Sergeant. He was given his honorable discharge from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in December, 1946.
Upon his return home, he worked at FortRobinson a as a carpenter. After the Fort closed he worked at Midwest Hardware and then in 1955 he went to work at Hagemeister Grain Company and remained there 21 years until it was sold to Hubbard Milling where he was the manager until his retirement in 1980.
Gene was very active in volunteering and community affairs. He served as president of the American Legion, as a member of the rodeo board, and on the Rodeo Queen committee for several years. He was a councilman for the St. John’s Catholic Church. He was a Crawford City Councilman for 11 years. He served on the Eagle Board of Trustees and was a volunteer on the Crawford rescue squad and fire department for 26 years. He volunteered for the Crawford RSVP delivering breakfast trays to patients in the CrawfordHospital, serving coffee at the Ponderosa Villa to residents, providing respite care for homebound individuals, and giving time to help in the VisitorInformationCenter.
In 1983, the Scottsbluff Star Herald featured Gene as “A Good Neighbor.” It is a great neighbor that Gene will be remembered in Crawford. His unending sense of service to his community benefited many, many people in town. Whenever someone needed a hand trimming a tree, mending a fence, or a ride to the doctor’s office, Gene could be counted on to help. Although Gene and Thera never had children of their own, many children in Crawford could find comfort in there support. Neighbor kids were so close to them that many will mourn his loss.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thera, brothers, Joseph Wayne, Lawrence William (Bub), and Cecil Henry Sr. & Mary Jeannene Richardson-Wasserburger, and sister, Esther Margaret and his parents Joe and Bessie.
His survivors include nieces and nephews Mary & Gary Weaver of Conroe, TX—Elizabeth, Christopher, and Whitney; Walter & Sean Wasserburger of Lusk WY; David and Theresa Wasserburger of Denver, CO—Kara, Skye, and Mindy; Cecil & Deana Wasserburger of Ft. Worth, TX—Cecil, Corey, Mallory and Willie; Lynn & John Lemmon of Valentine, NE—John Jay, Jennifer, and Jace; LaWayne & Doug Zeller of Chadron, NE—Rachel and Dylan; Jeannene and Merritt Schnell of Durham, NC—Jasmine and Ethan. He is also survived by eight great-great nieces and nephews, and very close friend, Claude Lewis.
