Funeral Services for Diana Rae Red Owl-Young, age 57, of Parmelee, SD will be Thursday, April 28, 2011 11:00 AM, CT at St. Agnes Catholic Hall in Parmelee, SD with Reverend Webster Two Hawk officiating.
A one night wake will begin on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 4:00 PM, CT at St. Agnes Catholic Hall in Parmelee, SD.
Burial will be at the Holy Innocence Episcopal Church, Parmelee, SD.
Immediate Survivors:
Mother: Betty Red Owl of Parmelee, SD.
Son: Jordan Young of Parmelee, SD.
Daughters: Randee and Bobbie Young both of Parmelee, SD.
Sisters: Sherry Red Owl and Barbara Boyd both of Mission, SD and Stephanie Blacksmith of Rosebud, SD.
Brother: Robert Boyd, Sr. of Mission, SD.
Grandchildren: Dylan Joseph Sage and Savannah Pacie Dyana both of Parmelee, SD.
God-Children: Michael Marie Greaves and Cassidy Cheyne Bordeaux, Diana Searby and David Young.
Uncles: Stanley Whipple and Richard Whipple.
Aunt: Charlotte Whipple
Diana Rae Red Owl was born September 23, 1953 in Rosebud, SD to Betty Whipple Red Owl and William H. Red Owl. Diana was raised on the Rosebud and Cheyenne River Reservations. She attended school at Cheyenne Eagle Butte Grade School, HeDog Elementary, and Todd County High School. She graduated with a GED from Sinte Gleska College.
Diana grew up riding horses at her grandparents, Carrie and Bob Whipples’ ranch west of Parmelee. She worked as a dispatcher at the Rosebud Police Department until she married Joseph E. Young on December 8, 1975, in Parmelee, South Dakota. To this union were born, Randee Rae, Bobbie Rene, and Jordan Joseph. Diana continued to live in Parmelee area where she raised her children and grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Together with her mother, they owned and operated the Parmelee Trading Post. Diana proved herself as an excellent businesswoman. In later years, Diana enjoyed running a successful catering business with her daughters and son. She was an accomplished cook and was famous for her homemade bread among her family and her customers.
Diana’s loves included gardening, rodeos, taking care of her home and family, and watching old movies. She especially loved Elvis Presley movies and country music. Among her many nieces and nephews, Diana was beloved for her teasing, pranks, and her quick smile and laughter. Among her friends, Diana was known for always lending a helping hand and would always provide food or help in a crisis without ever being asked.
Diana will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
