Funeral services for Doris Jane Pieper, age 94, long-time resident of Mirage Flats, and Hay Springs will be Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Hay Springs with Father James Joseph officiating.
A Vigil will be Monday, May 9, 2011 at 7:00 PM at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Hay Springs.
Burial will be at SunsetMemorial Park in Scottsbluff, Nebraska at approximately at 2:30 PM.
Memorials have been established for St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church and for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay SpringsNE69347.

Doris Jane Pieper, long-time resident of Mirage Flats, more recently of the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hay Springs, Nebraska passed away Monday, May 2, 2011 at the ChadronCommunityHospital in Chadron, Nebraska.
Doris was born in Mitchell, Nebraska, on October 12, 1916 to Louis and Edith (Sterner) Scalph. She married Lawrence T. Pieper on November 5, 1941 at Stockville, Nebraska. Doris and Lawrence had one daughter, Roylene.
The Piepers moved to North Platte, Nebraska where Lawrence worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Lawrence enlisted in the military on April 13, 1942. He and Doris went first to Wichita Falls, Texas then to Santa Monica, Ca. Later they went to Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio where Lawrence was a crew chief and engineer for B17 bombers and Doris worked for Frigidaire. Lawrence was discharged at Portland, Oregon on Nov. 15, 1945.
Doris and Lawrence returned to Mitchell, Nebraska where he worked for Straetker Bros. blacksmith shop in Scottsbluff until 1949. Lawrence, Doris and their daughter Roylene moved to a farm in the Mirage Flats irrigation area south of Hay Springs in 1949. Here, for over 60 years they were successful farmers, devoted members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Mirage Flats and contributors to the community. Doris was president, secretary and treasurer of the Sacred Heart Altar Society, Mirage Flats. She was president of the Chadron Deanery and representative of the Grand Island Diocese. Doris was a 50 year member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #239. She served as state treasurer of the Extension Club for State of Nebraska, secretary of the organization of the Box Butte Dam and president and secretary of Utopia Women’s Club of Hay Springs. From 1970-1982 Doris and Lawrence were in the Chicago area, where Lawrence was employed by Mellish & Murray, a metals fabrication company. During this time Doris held positions at Kraft Foods, United Van Lines and Standard Brands.
Immediate Survivors:
Daughter: Roylene and husband Don Pickard of Oak Park, IL.
Grandchildren: Cari and Doug Kremer; Steven and Jan Murray; Debora and Louis Panza.
Great-Grandchildren: Nicholas and Anna Panza, and Brian, Harold IV, Patrick, Casey, David, Sharon, Sophia and Ella Murray. Doris was preceded in death, March 3, 2010, by her husband Lawrence.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Ware Schuler; a brother, Lloyd (Clara) Scalph, and a grandson, Harold J Murray III.
