Funeral services for Richard L. Roberts, age 87, of Chadron will be Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs with Pastor Rod Heilbrun officiating.
 
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron.
 
Burial will be at the Hay Springs Cemetery.
 
A memorial has been established for the Hay Springs Fire and Rescue Department. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.

Richard L. Roberts of Chadron, Nebraska died on May 7, 2011 at the Chadron Community Hospital.
 
Richard was born on April 10, 1924 in Rodney, Iowa to Willard L. and Marvel A. Roberts. Richard grew up in Hay Springs and attended school there from kindergarten through high school and graduated with the class of 1942. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943 and graduated from Aviation Cadet training as a pilot and flew a new B 17 across the Atlantic to England where he was stationed with the 94th Bomb Group and flew bombing raids over Germany. After the war he was stationed at Templehof of Berlin. He returned home in 1946. He stayed in the Air Force Reserves.
 
On March 19, 1948, Richard and Eval Orr were married. They lived in Hay Springs and Rushville for several years. He flew many rescue missions during the 1949 blizzard. He was recalled to active duty in 1949 and flew 156 flights on the Berlin Airlift during the Russian blockade, carrying coal and other supplies into Berlin.
 
He then returned to Hay Springs until 1957, when they moved to Dickinson, North Dakota where Richard worked for the FAA as an Air Traffic Specialist until 1980, when they moved to Chadron where Richard worked at the Flight Service Station until it closed. He was the last employee there. Richard and Eval celebrated 63 years of marriage in March.
 
He is survived by his wife, daughter Patricia (Vern) Hook, daughter Carol (Mike) Guttu, son Todd, and five grandchildren.
 
He was preceded in death by his mother Marvel, father Willard Roberts and sister Pauline Lukens.
