Committal service and internment for Rodney (Rod) Ray Huss will be Monday, May 16, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance, NE.

Rodney (Rod) Ray Huss, highly decorated Air Force retiree, passed away at the age of 54, while living in Ogden, UT. Rod was born April 9, 1957, in Rushville, NE., to Vernon Louis and Evelyn Irene (Owen) Huss. The first of the five R. Ray/Rae (s), Rod declined to graduate with his class of 1975 so that he could enter the military. After earning his GED, he joined the US Air Force and became a Jet Aircraft Mechanic.
Rod’s service in the military consisted of duty at stateside bases including Sheppard AFB, TX., Castle AFB, CA., Altus AFB, OK., Travis AFB, CA., and Little Rock AFB, AR. Overseas duties included Ram-stein AFB, Germany, Rhine Mien, Germany and other temporary duty stations.
His experiences in the Air Force proved to be note worthy. Technical talents led to him becoming a co-author of a widely used maintenance manual for C-130’s, The Check List of Test Flight. Rod eventually became a Flight Engineer and Flight Engineer Instructor. His responsibilities included test flying every model of C-130 in the inventory of the US Air Force, US Navy, US Marine Corp, and every model flown by the Colombian Air Force. He was deployed to fly airlift missions to US Embassies in Bulgaria, Romania, Norway, and Yugoslavia. He also flew missions to support Operation Desert Shield and Storm. Numerous missions over hostile territory led to him being awarded the US Air Force Air Medal five times.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1994, he moved to San Antonio, TX. to care for his only children, the four legged canine type. At times, he had up to five living in his home. Mandy, Sidney, Synj, Gretchen, Jack, and Jamie were just a few of the many he loved. Much of his time was spent volunteering at Converse Animal Shelter so that he could love more animals than what his home space would allow for.
Rod later began a second career as a Fire Alarm Technician. This work included inspecting and certifying fire alarms. As well, he installed nurse call systems, telephone systems, and security systems.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Evelyn. Rod is survived by two Aunts, Louis Owen Brown and Gladys Huss Piper.

Siblings: Randy, Rosalyn Mader (husband Steve), Ryan (Rowena), Robyn Kelly (husband Scott).
Numerous nieces and nephews.
