Funeral services for Virgil Young, 57, of Hay Springs, Nebraska will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 10:30 AM at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Hay Springs with Father James Joseph and Father Tim Stoner officiating. Burial will be at the HaySpringsCatholicCemetery. A vigil will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the church.
Virgil Lee Young was born in Osmond, Nebraska, on September 26, 1953, to Bud and Virginia Young. He grew up on the family farm in Randolph, Nebraska, where he attended elementary and high school. He met the love of his life, Barb, in a hayfield at the age of 16. She was a good Catholic girl and he was a rebel with a red 66 Chevelle.
After High School graduation, Virgil went to Lincoln where he worked for Abel Construction for a year until he was drafted. They killed the draft just days before he would have left. He then moved back to Randolph and started farming.
Virgil loved to go for a drive and have a beer. Working always came first but he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing 31 on Sunday nights with Sherrie, Lyle, and anyone else who showed up. He was never too busy to help out a friend or roll around on the floor with his kids and grandkids. He was famous for buying new farm equipment for his bride. He once said if he had it to do all over again, he wouldn’t change anything – No regrets.
Virgil married Barbara Jean Schmit "Bubba" on June 30, 1973. They farmed around Randolph until 1981. He was never content to stay in one place and starting relocating. Then he got a job with the railroad and moved to Alliance, Nebraska. He worked for the railroad for a year and then moved to Rushville, Nebraska where he farmed until 1984. They moved to Wray, Colorado, where they bought and operated a pellet mill for two years. He finally found his place when they planted their roots in Hay Springs. He worked for Lewin Grain, Northwest International, and then Rein Bros (John Deere) until 1997 when he started his own business, Young's Repair. He pulled wrenches and farmed with Barb and eventually turned the shop over to his two oldest boys.
Being a farmer, you are supposed to keep everything in production, so to Virgil and Barb's union they brought into this world six children; daughters, Nikki, Laura, and Sara, and sons, Adam, Andy, and Abe.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Barb Young, daughters, Nikki (Chuck) Toof and their children Anthony, Johnathan, and Samantha of Hay Springs, Laura (Butch) Faulkenberry and their children Kaleb, McKinna, Casey, and Cooper of Battle Creek, Iowa, Adam (Jen) Young and their children Dylan and Devyn of Hay Springs, Sara (Chris) Johnson and their children Hally, Heidyn, and Riley of Hay Springs, Andy Young of Hay Springs, and Abe Young of Hay Springs. He is also survived by two sisters Paula (Ron) and Krista (Carl), two brothers Roger (Donna) and Rick, mother-in-law Shirley, brother-in-laws Dave (Pix), Paul (Corinne), Bill (Sindee), and Mike (Jeri), sister-in-laws Kathy (Ed), Theresa (John), Pat (Greg), Joanne (Alan), and Rose (Dan), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Virgil was welcomed to heaven by his mother and father, Bud and Virginia, father-in-law, Vincent, brother-in-law, Ed Sauser, two nephews, Dan Sauser and Jamie Schmit, and a niece Shauna Schmit.
