A Funeral Mass for Lois Farrell, age 94, of Chadron, will be Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron with Father Tim Stoner officiating.
Burial will be with her husband Steve at the Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron.
A memorial has been established for the Ponderosa Villa. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Lois Farrell, age 94, passed away May 28, 2011 at Crestview Care Center in Chadron, where she had received kind and loving care for several years.
Lois was born February 22, 1917 in Chadron to Parley and LuRena (Broghammer) Hyde.
While growing up in Chadron, she lived in the brick home that was built by her father on the 200 block of Bordeaux Street, across from the old Elk’s Club. Parley was a U.S. Deputy Marshall and had a clothing store in Chadron. He was fatally injured in a motor vehicle accident while transporting a prisoner from Chadron to Alliance. Her mother, LuRena, worked at Chadron State Teachers College in the dormitories and as a school nurse.
Lois attended school at the Assumption Academy and Chadron High School and graduated from Chadron State with a degree in education. She excelled in foreign languages, speaking Latin, German and French fluently.
Lois’ parents were excellent dancers, especially ballroom dancing, and her mother started Lois in dance classes when she was a young girl. She took ballet and tap, and eventually had her own studio in Chadron at the location of the old Grave’s photography building on Main Street.
Lois married her high school sweetheart, Steve Farrell, also of Chadron. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. After the war, they moved to Nevada where Steve worked as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. They lived in Sparks and Imlay before settling in Carlin. While in Carlin, Lois taught school in the elementary and high school for many years. She also opened dance studios in Carlin, Elko and Battle Mountain. She and her students could be seen dancing all over the West. When she retired, Lois moved back to Chadron and Crawford, Nebraska to care for her aging mother and her ailing brother. While in Crawford, Lois opened another dance studio and took her dancers to performances in Denver and in Salt Lake City.
Lois was a very kind and giving person. She always had time for others and was willing to go the extra mile to help out. For many years she entertained the residents at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford with her singing and playing the piano.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband Steve, her parents Parley and LuRena Hyde, Sister Catherine Tobin, and brother Joe Hyde. She is survived by her niece, Julie (Tobin) McCray of Riverton, Wyoming, nephew Dan Tobin of Grand Canyon, Arizona and several great nieces and nephews.
