Martin Hans Raymer of Hay Springs passed away Friday, June 17, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home at age of 83.

Martin was born August 14, 1927 in rural Hay Springs to John Martin and Matilda (Stoeterau) Raymer. He was the youngest of six children. At the age of nine months, he was left fatherless. When he was fifteen, he quit school and got a job to help support the family. He grew up knowing hardships, learning resourcefulness and strong work ethic.

On April 15, 1947, he married Margaret Ann Kutschara in Rushville, Nebraska. To this union, two children, Connie Kay and Michael Gene, were born. They made their home south of Hay Springs where Martin farmed and ranched for 64 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed building and carpentry. He helped build several houses including their present home, and played one of the major roles in the building of the present Zion Lutheran Church. Being mechanically gifted and creative, he was always tinkering in his shop, repairing or building something.

On November 18, 1928, Martin became the first person to be baptized in the newly established Zion Lutheran Church. He was confirmed in the church on July 23, 1954 and has been a life time member.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Douglas, Wesley, and William and sisters, Alma and Nellie.
