06/25/2011 - Dr. Robert John Luneburg

Dr. Robert John Luneburg, 72, of Hay Springs, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Alliance, Nebraska.

He was born on June 28, 1938 to Fred and Olive Luneburg in Alliance. He was raised in Hay Springs among his friends and kept busy helping out at Luneburg Pharmacy. He had many wonderful childhood memories of spending time at his family ranch west of Hay Springs.

On June 28, 1959, he married Charlene Tuchek in Hay Springs. They then moved to Forest Grove, Oregon where he chose optometry as his career. He attended Pacific University College of Optometry there and graduated in 1962. He entered the US Air Force in the fall of 1962, stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, for the next three years. His daughter, Robyn, was born on the base in 1963.

In 1965, the family moved to Milbank, South Dakota, where he opened his first optometric practice. His second daughter, Amy, was born there in 1967. By 1976, home ties were calling, and the family moved back to Hay Springs and setup his optometry office, where he practiced for 29 years until retiring in 2005. He became interested in repairing small engines and televisions, but his greatest loves were the ranch and researching his ancestry.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene of Hay Springs, his daughter Robyn (Brad) Pekas of Tampa, Florida, daughter Amy (Brad) Cover of Alliance, Sister Janet (Richard) Jaggers of Alliance, and grandson, Mason Cover of Alliance, as well as nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Services will be Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs, with burial in the Hay Springs Cemetery with military honors.

The family suggests memorials to Hay Springs Fire Department or Prairie Haven Hospice, which may be sent to Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.
