G. Richard “Dick” Myers, age 76, long-time Chadron business and civic leader, died Saturday, Nov.12 at his home following a courageous bout with cancer.

A celebration of his life will be Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Student Center Ballroom at Chadron State College. The celebration of life will be led by Charles Granade, Pastor of the Ridgeview Bible Church.

He graduated from Gering High School was a member of the basketball team that qualified for the state tournament his senior year in 1953. He also attained the rank of Eagle Scout and attended the University of Colorado where he earned a degree in pharmacy.

While in Boulder, Dick met Marlene Rehn. They married in Burley, Idaho, on June 29, 1958. After he practiced pharmacy briefly in Portland Oregon, Dick and Marlene moved to Gering to work for his parents at Myers Drug Store there.

In 1962, the family purchased the Saults Drug Store and Dick and Marlene moved to Chadron to start a long career at Myers Drug Store at the corner of Third and Main Streets. The store was sold and he retired in 2000.

Dick was heavily involved in many aspects of the community and also was selected to serve on at least three statewide organizations.

Locally, he was past president of the Chadron Chamber of Commerce, the Chadron Rotary Club and the Chadron Development Corporation.

He also was a director of the Chadron State Foundation and the Chadron Community Hospital board and was a past member of the Chadron Board of Education.

In addition, he served on the board of Chadron's TeamMates chapter and the Chadron Community Foundation and was chairman of the committees that studied the need and then constructed Crest View Care Center in the mid-1960s and remodeled the Chadron Middle School in the early 1980s.

On the state level, Dick was president of the Nebraska Pharmacists Association and a member of the Nebraska Board of Examiners in Pharmacy and the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Board of Counselors.

Dick was an active member of Ridgeview BibleChurch in Chadron and Gideon’s International.

He loved his family, his friends, his community, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Chadron State Eagles, his country and, most importantly, his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Dick enjoyed golf, music, dancing, playing games and spending time with family and friends. Through his leadership, Myers Drug was an extremely friendly place that served as one of the community’s leading ambassadors.

Dick is survived by Marlene, his wife of 53 years; his children Kristin (and Dave) Johnson of Chadron and Rick (and Teresa) Myers of Fort Worth, Tex.; and his grandchildren Cassia, Jacob, Luke and Jessica Myers of Fort Worth and Garrett, Kindra, Calen, Keenan and Danielle Johnson of Chadron. He is also survived by his sister Pat (and Jerry) Einfalt of Palo Alto, CA.
