12/08/2011 - George Robert Wood
George Robert Wood was born on June 18, 1928 at Hay Springs, Nebraska to Robert and Ruby Wood. He passed away on December 1, 2011 at Chadron Community Hospital in Chadron.
He lived on a farm southwest of Hay Springs in the Antelope area until 1939 when the family moved to Chadron. He attended both Kenwood and Chadron Prep Schools. He worked as a farmhand during his early life. It was during this time he met and married Ila May Swigert of Oelrichs, South Dakota on July 25, 1948. To this union two sons were born.
In 1946, he joined the US Marines and was later medically discharged. He followed his father’s trade as a carpenter. He was a local contractor and builder for many years. He worked build several of the College buildings, the High School and many new homes in Chadron.
He spent twenty-seven years working in the Boy Scout Program. At one time, he served both as Scoutmaster and Cubmaster. He was awarded the “Scoutmaster of the Year” award in 1984 of the Wyo-braska District. He was also a recipient of the “Aksarben Good Neighbor” award in 1964 for his volunteer work with the boys.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, past member and Commander of the American Legion and past member of the Veteran’s Honor Guard. George was a good father, husband, and a good neighbor who was always willing to do things for others and lent a helping hand when he was in good health.
He is survived by his wife, Ila May, sons Michael and wife Angie of Anchorage, Alaska and Curtis of Aurora, Colorado, four grandchildren; Jason of Spring, Texas, Megan (Cody) Porter of Conroe, Texas, Joshua of Anchorage, Alaska, and Sheena of Omaha, Nebraska. He is also survived by numerous double cousins. He was preceded in death by parents, seven brothers and three sisters.
Graveside services will be held on December 8, 2011 at 10:00 AM Hillside Cemetery in Oelrichs, South Dakota with Pastor Jim West officiating.
A memorial has been established for the Diabetes Association or the Chadron Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
