Memorial services for Ronald G. Herrick will be Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Harrison with Reverend George Kilmer officiating.
Ronald Gene Herrick, 65, of Harrison, passed away on March 4, 2012 in Crawford, Nebraska surrounded by his family.
Ron was born on February 11, 1947, in McCook, Nebraska to Arthur L. and Rachel M. Herrick. The first five years, Ron spent in Orafino, Nebraska. The family moved to Benkelman in time for Ron to begin kindergarten. He graduated from Benkelman High School in 1965. After high school, Ron attended Chadron State College. He graduated in 1970, with a degree in teaching. This was same year that Ron married his wife, Rea Ann Breuster. To this union, their son Chad was born in 1975.
Ron’s first teaching position was in Glenrock, Wyoming where he taught mathematics and coached the swim team. His math class made it to State Competition. He continued to teach in Glenrock until 1978.
Ron and Rea left Glenrock in 1978 to pursue the opportunity of becoming business owners. They purchased the Corner Market in Harrison, Nebraska from Rea’s parents, which they owned and operated until 2010.
Sports were always a big part of Ron’s life. He participated in basketball and track as a student in Benkelman and spent time as a lifeguard during the summers. He also enjoyed playing pool and once qualified for the National 9-Ball Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. Later in life, Ron picked up the game of golf and could be found out on Legend Buttes Golf Course most days above 45 degrees.
Ron was a tender hearted man and couldn’t bear to see someone in need. As a young man, he would often bring people home with him where they would live until they were on their feet again. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Rea of Harrison, his Son Chad (Katie) of Atkins, Iowa, and two grandsons, Avery and Brennan.
A memorial has been established for the Legend Buttes Golf Course. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
