Andy was born May 31, 1946 in Neligh, Nebraska in his grandmother’s house, the son of Virgil H. and Beulah Mae (Stahl) Anderson. As a child he was raised by numerous family members living in Nebraska, Indiana, and Connecticut with his brother Gene and sister Elmorna.
In high school he moved to Chadron, Nebraska where he graduated in 1965. In January 1966 he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps where he served one year in Vietnam as a transport operator. Richard was always very proud of being a Marine. On June 8, 1966 he married Cindy Masek in Chadron, Nebraska. In March 1967 their first daughter Susan was born. Susan was born while he was still in Vietnam. After his military discharge they lived in Chadron where their second daughter Joni was born in October 1970. They moved to Alliance, Nebraska in April 1971 and Richard was a mechanic, then went into the meat cutting business working for Nash Finch in Alliance, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Julesburg, Colorado and finally coming to Wheatland in 1979. In 1981 Richard became employed by Basin Electric Power where he continued to work until he retired in March 2008.
Andy enjoyed fishing, woodworking, making items for his children and grandchildren, and taking care of his yard. In his retirement his health limited his activities but liked to sit on the back porch and watch and feed the birds and squirrels. His greatest delight was his five grandsons and two granddaughters. He always supported his grandsons in their sporting events and activities and would play old maid, puzzles or whatever the granddaughters wished.
