Funeral services for Esther “Black Elk” DeSersa, age 89, of Manderson, SD, will be Friday, May 2, 2014 at 10:00 AM, at the Wounded Knee District School in Manderson, SD.
Burial services will be at 2:00 PM at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.
A two night wake service will start on Wednesday, April 30th at 1:00 PM and Thursday, May 1st, 2014 at Wounded Knee District School, Manderson, South Dakota.
Esther (Wichapi To Win) Black Elk, the daughter of Ben and Ellen (Bissonette) Black Elk passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the age of 89. She was born June 11, 1924, Manderson, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron DeSersa, Sr., son (Bryon DeSersa Sr.), parents, Ben and Ellen Black Elk, sisters (Olivia Pourier), (Kate Clifford) and (Grace McCoy), brothers (Benjamin Black Elk Jr. and Henry Black Elk) and one grandson (Trenton Bettelyoun).
She attended Holy Rosary Mission where she graduated Valedictorian of her class. She graduated from nursing school in Oklahoma. She then went to work in a Government Hospital in Portland, Oregon where she met Aaron DeSersa Sr. They married in Hot Springs S.D. She got a Bachelor’s Degree in Business/Health. She then taught Elementary School in Mission S.D. She was a co-owner in Shannon Country News with her husband. She worked for the BIA Credit and Land Departments before becoming the First Woman Executive Secretary of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. She then became Director of the Health Board for the Oglala Sioux Tribe and was influential in securing a Hospital, Dialysis Center and Ambulance Service Center for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation while working for the Health Board. She then retired but continued to work part-time for the Oglala Sioux Tribe and Health Board writing proposals of all types. She was a member of the Catholic Congress and she traveled to Rome to meet the Pope.

Sons: Clifton DeSersa Sr., Aaron (Sally) DeSersa Jr., Mitchel DeSersa, and Sherman DeSersa Sr. all of White Butte, Manderson, S.D
Daughters: Cheryl (Ed) Bettelyoun of Long Valley, S.D. and Olivia (Honeybee) DeSersa of White Butte, Manderson S.D Hunka Son, Gary Thomas Austin, Texas
Grandchildren: 22
Great-grandchildren: 34
Numerous amounts of nephews and nieces whom loved her dearly.
Sioux Funeral Home is in charge arrangements for Esther “Black Elk” DeSersa.
