Funeral Service for Arlene L. Martin, age 73, of Slim Buttes, SD, will be Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 10:00 AM at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD with Mr. Charles McGaa officiating.
A one night wake service will be Wednesday, August 27, 2014 starting at 3:00 PM, at the Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge, SD
Burial will be at the Martin Family Cemetery in Slim Buttes, SD
Arlene L. (Janis) Martin was born on February 26, 1941 in Porcupine, SD to David and Alfreda (Richard) Janis. Arlene attended Our Lady of Lourdes in Porcupine, SD until the 8th Grade; she then attended Oglala Community High School (OCS) in Pine Ridge. After high school, she attended secretarial school and worked as a secretary for the Title 1 Program.
In 1993, she graduated from the Oglala Lakota School of Nursing as a registered nurse and worked for Sioux San Hospital for 2 years, than at Pine Ridge I.H.S. for 10 years. Arlene eventually retired in 2004.
Arlene loved being a nurse and caring for our Lakota people. She worked mostly in Acute Care Nursing and spent many hours not only doing nursing care, but visiting the patients, laughing with them, and making her patients feel special. She was the type who made sure all family members were included in the patient care and treatment. She was an advocate for all her patients, she made sure they received the best care possible.
Arlene was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was family orientated, loved her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren.

Daughters: Ramona Red Shirt of Slim Buttes, SD, Nita Rodriquez of Ceres, CA, Carmel Red Shirt of Rapid City, SD, Jennifer Martin and Sheryl Martin both of Pine Ridge, SD
Son, Dale Martin of Slim Buttes, SD and Ron Martin of Slim Buttes, SD
Brother: Dave (Kathy) Janis of Manderson, SD
Sisters: Mona Janis of Gordon, NE and Florence Janis of Rapid City, SD
Grandchildren: 23
Great Grandchildren: 15
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Alfreda (Rchards) Janis; spouse, Francis “Poncho” Martin; sons, David and Ronald Martin; daughter, Susan Martin; brother, John; sisters, Marie “Bunny” Shields, Lucy LaDeaux, and Myrna Martin.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements.
