01/30/2015 - Charles Ellis Chipps
Funeral services for Charles Ellis Chipps “Ta Canupa Wakan” (The Living Canupa), age 67, will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Wanblee CAP Office in Wanblee, SD with Rev. Harold Eagle Bull officiating. Traditional Lakota services will be provided by Richard Moves Camp.
Burial will be at the Chipps Family Cemetery in Wanblee, SD.
A two-night wake service will start at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at the Wanblee CAP Office.
Charles passed away on January 20, 2015 in Springfield, MO. He was the fourth generation Medicine Man in the linage of Woptura, the best friend and spiritual advisor to Crazy Horse. He was given his Spirit name and then born in the Ceremony House to Ellis and Victoria Chipps on Horn Chipps land. He grew up in the ceremonies, becoming an intercessor and Spiritual Interpretor.
Charles helped thousands of souls to find their way back to wholeness, by teaching the power of prayer and gratitude. He taught that love is giving and forgiving. He was a father who loved his children. They were his pride and joy. He loved everyone with compassion and no conditions, helping anyone who crossed his path. He leaves a legacy of love.
He is loved and honored throughout this world and will forever be remembered by his family and those whose lives he touched while he fulfilled his destiny on Earth, living as a father, grandfather, teacher, guide, healer, and chief…a true Ate and Kola. He will be loved forever.
Charles is survived by children Sherry, Michelle, Jessie, Trevor, Vincent, Godfrey, Raelene, Charles, Jr., Jeffrey, Andrew, and Rochelle Chipps, all of Wanblee, SD, Ellis and Woptura Chipps, both of Springfield, TX, and Crystal Chipps of Mission, SD; many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and brothers Duane Standing Bear of Eagle Butte, SD and Robert Seide of Rapid City, SD. Charles also leaves behind many loved friends, Sundancers, and his Sundance community.
Charles was preceded in death by father Ellis Chips; mother Victoria (Lodge Skins) Chips; daughter Charlotte Chipps; wife Jaylene (Quick Bear) Chipps; and brothers Vincent, Philip, and Godfrey Chips.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Charles Ellis Chipps “Ta Canupa Wakan” (The Living Canupa).
