Marie passed away on February 11, 2015 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born on May 9, 1930 at Our Lady’s of Lourdes Hospital in Hot Springs, SD, the first daughter of Nicholas and Rose (Janzing) Bogner. Marie grew up on the family homestead ten miles southwest of Oelrichs, SD.   She attended Gilpin Elementary School (Cowboy Lookout School) and then graduated from Chadron Prep High School and Black Hills State College at Spearfish, SD, where she received her B.S. in Education and later her Master’s degree in Education.

Marie taught school in Fall River County, SD and Sioux County, NE. While teaching at the Round Top School in Sioux County, she met her future husband, Franklin Piper. They were married on June 1, 1957 in Hot Springs, SD, followed by a honeymoon in Yellowstone and Southern California. They moved to the ranch, which was homesteaded by Franklin’s parents. The family still owns it. Marie took over the operation and management of the ranch after Franklin’s death in 1976.

Later she worked on road construction as a flagger and also at the Sioux County Historical Society Museum in Harrison. In 2001, she was presented with the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award, which recognizes ranches owned by the same family for 100 years. She was a member of the Church of the Nativity Altar Society, member of the Highland Extension Club and 4-H Leader for 25 years. She enjoyed playing cards on Mondays at the Senior Citizen Center in Harrison and making food from her favorite recipes. Most of all, she enjoyed time with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She liked to say that if she had known how much fun they were, she would have skipped children and gone straight to grandchildren.

She is survived by daughters Kathryn (Ray) Dieckmann of Lusk, WY, Julia Piper of Harrison, NE, Rosa Roberts of Crawford, NE, and Cheryl (Craig) Scherbarth of Wallace, NE; sons Franklin of Harrison, NE, and Marvin (Carolyn) of Scribner, NE; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother Nick Bogner of Oelrichs, SD; sister Delores (Charles) Muhm of Sturgis, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Franklin J. Piper, parents Nicholas and Rose Bogner, brother Eugene Bogner, and son-in-law Bruce Roberts.

Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements for Marie Kathryn (Bogner) Piper.
