A memorial service for Arthur George "Chuck" Canaday, age 94, with Military Honors will be at 10:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Chadron, NE on Friday, February 27, 2015, followed by a luncheon at the American Legion in Chadron.
Burial has already taken place at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance, NE.
A memorial has been established for the American Legion. Donations may be sent to 123 Bordeaux St., Chadron, NE 69337.
Beloved husband, father, friend and hero Chuck Canaday rode his horse into heaven on February 8, 2015. He was born November 14, 1920 in Chadron, NE, the first of eight children born to Fred and Hazel Canaday. Chuck grew up in the canyon near Chadron State Park. He worked for awhile in the Civil Conservation Corp (CCC), and in September 1941 joined the Navy. On December 7, 1941 he was in port at Pearl Harbor when attacked by the Japanese. During his time in the service, he obtained the rank of Machinist's Mate Second. His accolades included American Defense (1) Star, American Area, Asiatic Pacific (3) Stars, Victory Medal WWII, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in September 1947. Chuck, a survivor of Pearl Harbor, was very proud to have served his country.
He married Alta Sexton, and they had four children together. Eventually they moved to Eugene, OR, where Chuck worked for Georgia Pacific Plywood Mill. After the death of Alta in 1976, Chuck married the "love of his life and his soul mate" Leann Jarvis. After he retired from the plywood mill, he and Leann moved from Oregon to Chadron and continued operating a horseshoeing business together. During this time, Chuck was able to reconnect with his family from the area and made countless new friends across western Nebraska. Chuck was a true "cowboy," often helping neighbors during calving season by rounding up cattle, branding, and of course, cattle drives or any excuse to ride one of his many horses. He was even bucked off at age 90 and walked away to tell about it. If you knew Chuck, he always had a story to tell and was great at telling them, too! He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Chuck is survived by “his beautiful bride” of 37 years Leann Canaday of Chadron, NE; son Patrick Canaday of Sedro Wooley, WA; daughter Laura Poteet of Eugene, OR; sisters Clair Leithead of Douglas, WY and Twyla Gladson of Worland, WY; brothers Robert Canaday of Chadron NE and Larry Canaday of Mayer, AZ; grandchildren Harley, Brad, and Austin; and great-grandchildren Thor, Megan, Jake, Troy, and Tessa.
He was preceded in death by father Fred Canaday, mother Hazel Canaday, son Glen Canaday, daughter Letha Wilhelm, grandson Christopher Canaday, brother Bill Canaday, and sisters Mable Wickheiser and Ellen Frye.
