Mother, aunt, sister, and grandmother Martha entered her eternal rest on May 10, 2015 in Bayard, NE, with her family at her side.
Martha was born on March 31, 1934 in Allen, SD to Edward Means and Rosa Brave Heart. Martha graduated high school from Brookings, SD and went on to get a certification in Cooking. She lived in Texas and worked at a hospital, cleaning and delivering trays to patients. Martha was a cook at Allen Head Start for 15 years.
Martha married Gordon DuBray on June 3, 1949 and then moved backed to Allen, SD, where they welcomed their daughter, Pauline R. DuBray, along with many children they took in as their own. They welcomed Mitchel DuBray, Ron Duke, Marvin Poor Bear DuBray, Ruth Ann DuBray, Roger Yellow Boy Jr., Jody DuBray, Mary Lou Acosta, and Elbridge DuBray into their home as their own children. Martha set about her training to be a cook. Her children remember her as a hardworking, strong woman who made beautiful quilts, embroidery, and was known for canning pickles, beets, and cherries. She was an extremely busy person always doing something for someone. She and her husband Gordon were bus monitors for PorcupineSchool, a job they both enjoyed. Back in her day, Martha was not afraid to ride a horse either, and she was a funny individual who surprisingly could make you laugh or even cry. She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Allen, SD and also followed her traditional roots of being a Lakota.
Martha is survived by sister Josephine White Crane of Potato Creek; half-brother Maverick Means of Pine Ridge, SD; children Pauline R. DuBray, Mitchell (Pattsy) DuBray Sr., and Ron (Irene) Duke of Allen, SD, Ruth Ann DuBray of Scottsbluff, NE, and Roger (Mary) Yellow Boy and Elbridge DuBray Sr. of Allen, SD; grandchildren Rochelle (Nick) Black Elk, Sherrie (Arthur) Has No Horse, and Wayne Fire Thunder Jr. of Allen, SD, Jody DuBray of Iowa, and Mary (Manuel) Acosta of Bayard, NE; hunka grandson Adam Little Elk, and many great grandchildren.
