Funeral services for Virginia Loraine King, age 95, of Hay Springs, NE will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Hay Springs, NE with Pastor Paul Smith officiating.

Burial will be at Hay Springs City Cemetery in Hay Springs, NE.

A memorial has been established for the Hay Springs Ambulance Fund. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Drabbels Mortuary, PO Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.

Virginia passed away on June 3, 2015 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hay Springs, NE, where she had been a resident since July 2014. She was born on November 7, 1919 in Hay Springs, NE to James Edward Walgren and Emma Elvera (Anderson) Walgren.

Virginia was raised on a ranch south and west of Hay Springs, NE in Dawes County, NE. She was the third of five children. She had two older brothers, Wayne Walgren and Harold Walgren, and two younger brothers, William Walgren and Gerald Walgren.

While growing up on the ranch and farmstead in Dawes County, Virginia attended grade school at Pleasant HillSchool. She described an idyllic childhood, with her four brothers teasing her unmercifully, and so she learned to have a sense of humor as well as an ability to stand up for herself. During her youth, Virginia discovered that she loved to dance and had a wonderful sense of rhythm.

She graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1936, and on December 16, 1936, she married the love of her life, Kenneth J. King. To that marriage, three children were born, Keith K. King, Elsie M. King (now Caparoon) and Dennis D. King.

After marrying Kenneth, the two of them worked side by side to make a home and a living for their family. As a young farm couple, they were proof that hard work can bring success while adhering to strong moral and religious values. Virginia had many talents, which are representative of young women of that era. Included in her many talents was the ability to put together a meal upon short notice when friends, family, and neighbors dropped by. She was an excellent cook and especially an excellent pie maker. Along with her skills at homemaking and raising a family, Virginia worked side by side with Kenneth in the fields. Virginia could plow a field and harvest a crop as well as many farmers. She was also adept at milking cows and shingling roofs. On her own, she shingled most of the farm outbuildings at one time or another. She was also an excellent seamstress, making many of the clothes for the family and later on for her grandchildren.

As time took its toll on her body, Virginia discovered the enjoyment of travel. She traveled to many interesting places. While Kenneth was yet alive, they traveled together and enjoyed some of the fruits of their labor. Kenneth died in 1998, and Virginia continued on alone, still enjoying travel and the close and loving relationship she had with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Virginia is survived by daughter Elsie M. Caparoon of Chadron, NE; son Dennis D. King and wife Kathryn Ann of Gordon, NE; grandchildren Jeffrey Kenneth King and wife Jennifer of Grand Island, NE, Trina Ann Kuper and husband Michael of Canton, SD, Sharon Austin and husband Norm of DePere, WI, Lori Darrough and husband Lance of Lincoln, NE, and Gary Caparoon of Chadron, NE; eight great-grandchildren; and brother Gerald Walgren of Rushville, NE.

Preceding Virginia in death were firstborn son Keith K. King, who died in infancy; son-in-law Gordon Caparoon; great-granddaughters Laraine Kolb and Jennifer Kolb; Virginia’s parents; and brothers Wayne, Harold, and William.

Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
