06/19/2015 - Carol Jean Orr

Graveside services for Carol Jean Orr, age 90, of Harrison, NE will be at 3:00 PM on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Ash Hollow Cemetery in Lewellen, NE with her grandson, Scott Skavdahl, presiding. A gathering will be held at the Oregon Trail Trading Post, the building where Carol was born, after the service.

Carol passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Prairie Pines Assisted Living in Chadron, NE. She was born on August 11, 1924 in Lewellen, NE to James and Camilla Glasgow. After high school, she and Rollie Orr were married in September 1941. Four children were born to this union: Pat (Orr) Skavdahl, James H., John M., and Jack A. Orr. Rollie and Carol lived on Signal Bluff Ranch from the time they were married until Rollie’s death in 1975. In 1979, Carol moved to New Mexico.

Carol enjoyed associations with art clubs both in Lewellen and New Mexico. While living in New Mexico, she was a docent at the Natural History Museum in Albuquerque and a member of a volunteer group who helped unearth one of the largest dinosaurs ever found in the USA.

Carol was a terrific cook, a great seamstress, and a good artist. She appreciated the art of the Southwest and amassed quite a collection of Southwest pottery and paintings. In 2004, she moved to Harrison, where her daughter lived. Carol had a good sense of humor and a quick wit, which she maintained until the end.

Carol is survived by daughter Pat (Orr) Skavdahl and husband John; sons James (Butch) and wife Rosalie, John (Pete) and wife Nancy, and Jack and wife Laurie; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and good friend Elmer Armijo of Pena Blanca, NM.

Memorials may be sent to the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department or the Lewellen Fire Department. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, PO Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
