07/10/2015 - Edgar (Pete) Wood

Memorial services for Edgar Dean (Pete) Wood, age 80, will be at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Jim Rasmussen officiating.

A memorial has been established for the donor’s local hospice organization, for without them, Pete’s wife Cookey would have had a much more difficult journey.

Online condolences can be made at www.chamberlainchapel.com.

Pete lost a long battle with dementia on July 29, 2014. He passed at home with his greatest cheerleader by his side of over sixty years.

He is survived by his ever loving wife, Gertrude (Cookey) Wood; sons David Wayne Wood and wife Merissa of Longmont, CO, and Randy Dean Wood and wife LuAnn of Elon, NC; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews.

Pete was the son of Reuben Bayard Wood and Opal (Gibbs) Wood, who are both deceased. Being the youngest of six children, he was also preceded in death by siblings Clifford A. Wood, Virgil W. Wood, Lavern E. Wood, Eugene A. Wood, and Vivian A (Wood) Boyd.

Pete graduated from Prep High School in Chadron NE, and was a member of the state champion basketball team of 1952. After school, he married Cookey Fesler on August 20, 1953 and moved to California to pursue a career in carpentry. He returned to Chadron in the late 50s, and continued to build and remodel homes throughout Dawes County and the state until they moved to Lake Powell, AZ in 1987, where they lived until his passing.

A very accomplished carpenter and wood carver, Pete's love for woodworking always was high on his list, from building several boats, homes, and restaurants, to carving some of the most beautiful art seen anywhere. He was very active in the Elks Lodge of Chadron and instrumental in the design and building of the Elks Lodge. Along with many people he helped in Chadron, he loved coaching little league baseball and had one team that won both round robin and tournament play.

Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements for Edgar Dean (Pete) Wood.
