Funeral services for Hoover Running Eagle “Mato Ptechela” (Short Bear), age 86, will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 23, 2015 at the Makasan Presbyterian Church Hall in Oglala, SD with Reverend Simon Looking Elk officiating.
Burial will be at the Makasan Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Oglala.
A one-night wake service will begin at 4:00 PM on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the Makasan Presbyterian Church Hall in Oglala.
Hoover was a beloved uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was also a veteran in the United States Army. He went home to the Lord on October 14, 2015 at Rapid CityRegionalHospital surrounded by family. He was born on August 29, 1929 in Oglala, SD, to Susie Chief Eagle-Running Eagle and Mark Running Eagle. He grew up in Oglala, SD. He attended LonemanSchool and OglalaCommunitySchool. At age 18, Hoover was drafted by the United States Army and fought in two wars, World War II and Korea. The Army gave Hoover his Military Horse after his service in the Korean War. Hoover was a proud veteran and a chaplain for the Local Post.
Hoover was a kind, generous, humble and quiet man. He had a strong faith and belief and often read his Bible.
Hoover is survived by nieces Bernadette Red Ear Horse of Bremerton, WA, Bernadine Noble (Jorge Ramirez), Irma Red Ear Horse, and Karen Red Ear Horse of Oglala, SD; nephews Gaylord Red Ear Horse of Oglala, SD and Harris Red Ear Horse (Violet Catches) of Pierre, SD; grandchildren Joy and Jordan Noble of Rapid City, SD, Dustin and Kevin Howtopat Jr. of Bremerton, WA, Blaine Wilson, Isaac and Curtis Red Owl and Denae Yellow Boy of Oglala, SD, and Florence and Katrina Romero of Pierre, SD; great-grandchildren Adrian Noble of Oglala, SD and Aiyana, Accalia, Anthony, Achilles and Adrina Boker of Rapid City, SD; and adopted brother Don Belile of Pine Ridge, SD.
Hoover was preceded in death by sisters Florine Red Ear Horse and Josephine Running Eagle and brothers John Running Eagle, Samuel Running Eagle, Timus Running Eagle and Thomas Running Eagle.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD is in charge of arrangements for Hoover Running Eagle “Mato Ptechela” (Short Bear).
