10/26/2015 - Eugene Larry Short Horn Jr.
Eugene Larry Short Horn Jr., age 55, will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 26, 2015 at the St. Barnabas Church Hall in Kyle, SD with Reverend Harold Eagle Bull and Pastor Charles and Kim Montileaux officiating.
Burial will be at St. Barnabas Church Cemetery in Kyle, SD.
A one-night wake service will begin at 10:00 AM on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the St. Barnabas Church Hall in Kyle.
Larry passed away on October 12, 2015 in Reno, NV.
Survivors include:
Mother Myrnette Wounded Head of Kyle, SD
Brothers William (Bill) Short Horn, Victor Short Horn, and Gaylord Broken Leg of Kyle, SD
Sisters Donna Peniska of Sioux Falls, SD, Pearl Hopkins of Rapid City, SD and Veronica Hopkins of Kyle, SD
Larry was preceded in death by father Eugene Short Horn and sisters Marla Short Horn and Joann Short Horn.
Eugene was full of tradition! He carried and showed respect for those he loved and whom he met. He had compassion for those he felt were at a loss. He had the wisdom taught to him through his Grandmothers/Grandfathers/Father & Mother, (Ina na Ate) including Aunts (Tuwins) and Uncles (Leksis). Larry enrolled and attended Kicking Horse Job Corps (Ronan, MT) where he studied the art of Culinary Cooking. Larry lived in the traditions of the Lakota Oyate. He dedicated his time and life to the Spiritual ways of the Lakota People. He was very helpful in and around Sundances, and on one occasion was involved with the Yellow Thunder Winter Camp in the Sacred Black Hills (He Sapa). He also used to assist in the Black Crow’s Sundance near Wanblee, SD. He participated in the “Hoka Hey Camp” south of Hot Springs (Mni Kata), SD, which was protesting against the “Honeywell’s proposed Munitions Testing Facility” at the time, in the Hell Canyon area. Larry enjoyed doing artwork and loved the outdoors. During his return visits home, he camped at the family’s old log cabin, situated in the beauty of the Badlands (Mako Sica), the former ArielGunneryRange, north of Kyle Village, SD.
In his lifetime, Larry was eager and ready to join in a cause to protect the land and people. On all roads (Canku) Larry traveled, one led him to Reno, NV and Sparks, NV, where he met his wife, Mary Lou, to whom we owe our most sincere Thank You (Wopila). Tragically, on October 12, 2015, Larry traveled on his final road. A path prepared (perhaps) by Tunkasila (Great Mystery) to become united with Loved-Ones that have gone on before him. Larry will be greatly missed!
